Question about Dell E173FP 17" LCD Flat Panel Monitor

1 Answer

Dell flat screen 17 in. monitor

My monitor is about 3 years old and it blinks off and on. My screen goes to black about a second then comes back and does this over and over and gets faster and faster. It is very annoying. Is there a repair that can be done or do I just need to replace the monitor? Everyone I ask gives me a different answer. One person said it is the power supply that is going out and I need to replace the whole monitor.

Mine only does this on a restart. The left side is darker or faded smoke gray and right side wants to light up,but shuts off after about 45 seconds. I am not sure what is wrong, but will be taking it in to have it looked at. I tore it down and I did not find anything that stood out as a problem. I feel that it is a heat related issued like a capacitor problem. I guess I will find out when I get the bill. Haha

Hi frecklesface,

Remember, when dealing with monitors, the process of elimination is the best. To elaborate this, it means, connect a similar monitor (if you can convince someone to lend you temporarily just to check if it works on your PC) if that works fine, then your monitor is faulty but if the other monitor behaves in the same manner as yours, then the fault could be in the Graphics section of your motherboard. (whether onboard or a graphics card whatever might be the case)

There is one more thing you might be missing out. Go to Display settings in your Control Panel and in that go to the Settings tag in that click on the Monitor Tag and in that check the frequency in Hertz that is selected. change that one by one and see if that helps. Only if your efforts here prove futile, then do as I told you earlier in this note.

If the monitor is found to be faulty, get it rectified by taking it to an authorised service center but if the motherboard's graphics section is faulty then ther are 2 options...
1.) If the graphics is an On-board one (which they normally are nowadays) then disable it from CMOS and add an external graphics card in either AGP or PCI (anyone you get from the market... depends on your requirements) restart and see if this helps. I feel its the best logical way it could be done.

Dell 1704 monitor goes to black screen after one

Hi my name is Rain.
Ok so that im clear on the problem. your monitor will come on but in a matter of seconds it goes to a black screen?
If this is the problem. The answers you seek will most likely
be in your video card.
Try this test:
  • Unplug monitor from the computer.
  • Turn on monitor .
  • Look for monitor self test screen.
If you see the monitors self test screen then your problem indeed is
the video card . You will need to replace the video card inside of the computer.

My Dell 17' monitor will come on for only about 3 seconds then the screen goes black. Worked fine this morning... is there anything I can do?

you have lost the large capacitor in the power supply of the monitor (a common problem) the capacitor is a round can; it has creases in the top; the can top is flat if good, round if bad. replace it

Screen goes black, but power light is on (not blinking)

The problem is not with your screen. Its the problem of Video Card of your system which is unable to send Video Signals to the Screen.

Dell E173FPc 17" TFT when turned on goes black

Hi Gaz,

First, verify the monitor is functional.
Monitor STFC (Self Test Feature Check)
Turn off the monitor
Plug the monitor power cord directly into the wall socket to remove any surge protectors or APCs from the troubleshooting equation
Unplug the monitor video cable from the back of the computer
Turn on the monitor
The floating dialog box should appear on screen against a black background.
If the issue appears during the STFC, the monitor is defective. What are the results please?

When energized, screen stays on for about two seconds then blanks

Hi...there,
Well, it's seems your monitor backlight inverter are bursted. Usually, the monitor had a 1 year for the screen panel and 3 years for parts and labors. You're still under warranty, send it back to manufacturer for repaired.

Dell - 17" flat screen

This sounds like the back light is gone on the monitir... to check this look very close at the monitor whet the PC has booted, if you see a VERY dim image on screen then it suggests that the back light is gone.

Many monitors hace a 3 year warranty so I would try a warranty claim before throwing it away
