Question about John Deere 420,1020,2010,2020,2510,2520 Tractor Float

Open Question

I have a LT166 with a 46'' mulching compatible deck with three blades. Had to take the deck off to replace the mower deck drive belt and had the mulching blades sharpened. I no longer mulch. I cut the grass and there is approximately 3/4 inch path that is not getting cut. It appears that it could be in between the center and blade closest to the discharge chute. I've replaced the belt and had the blades sharpened multiple times before without this symptom. When I initially reinstalled the blades, they were not flush to the spindle. I heard a metal scraping sound, so stopped and found my mistake. I was able to check the blade closest to the discharge to make sure it wasn't bent and that is good. One final note, while set at the highest setting, 4 inches, the blade height is actually 4 3/8 inches. Thank you for your help, Keith

SOURCE: uncut grass in center & higher grass cut on right.

Hi, this may sound obvious but make sure the new blade is the same type as the old one and make sure it is not fitted upside down. Spin the blades and make sure the tips are level with each other, this will tell you if the deck is straight where the blade spindles mount. Regards Phil.

How to use mulch plug on cordless mower

Mulch plugs are typically a cover that is affixed to the discharge chute of a mower deck. As blades spin, they cut grass, and lift them up into the swirling air above the cut grass and below the mower deck. The clippings are suspended until they are blown out of the chute.

Mulching, is the process where grass clippings aren't simply discharged out of the chute after cutting; rather they are kept under the mower deck and spin around suspended in the blades resulting in repeatedly being cut. Instead of long clippings exiting the chute, much smaller clipping result from multiple cuttings and settle back on to the lawn under the deck. The smaller clipping allows them to decompose much quicker and return nutrients to the lawn.

Long clippings take longer to decompose and can turn into thatch on top of soil between blades of grass - effectively smothering the lawn. Long clippings can sit on top of cut grass and choke off sunlight, etc. and cause dead spots. Thatch can occur with mulching too - but takes longer to accumulate.

Hello. Ran over a softball-sized rock with my Sears tractor (42 in deck, mulching blades) today. Mower and tractor stopped abruptly. Checked both blades, belt and mandrels, all looked ok. Engine starts...

Could be a safety switch but it sounds like a bearing or shaft is seized up due to the accident. First thing I would do is to remove deck belt and try to spin each blade separately by hand. By isolating each one, spinning one at a time you will be able to tell if your problem lies in the deck. If you have one that wont move the spindle assembly will need to be replaced. You may want to take a picture or sketch a diagram of belt routing before you remove deck belt to assist in reinstalling the belt when your done. Also, remember to do this with engine off. Good luck and happy wrenching!

Disengage mulch drive

Have you looked beneath the deck with someone engaging or disengaging the blade lever? Get underneath and observe how the belt travels from the engine pulley back, and follow it in the loop it travels to see how it works with the lever engaged and disengaged.

During mowing grass will gather underside of deck leaving 2 streaks on r and l if you turn deck off grass will fall out of deck before restarting u need tgo move or mower will stall from grass build up...

There are a couple of things going on here. First, the blades are likely worn out and need replaced. As they wear and loose some length they can leave a trail. Second, if you have regular blades on a deck configured (by having discharge plugged) for mulching and you are using regular blades, then you can have a problem with build up. Third, you can have clumping problems if the grass is not dry when you are mowing.

I hope this is helpful for you.

I have a mtd yard man 22inch / mulcher . My question is how do I get the mower to start mulching ?

For mowers like yours, there are straight cut discharge blades (for bagging the grass) and there are more expensive upswept mulching blades. Any holes in the sides of the deck must be covered to mulch as the blade keeps the grass up in the air under the deck, repeatedly cutting it...over and over..till it falls on the ground. So use a solid deck with the upswept type blade.

To mulch my grass clippings, do I have to use the side discharge or can I simply remove the bag and insert the rear plug?

Insert the rear plug if mulching is desired. The key to mulching is to mow the lawn frequently. You want to keep the mower deck height high enough to cut the grass and allow the mulching blades to work, but just low enough to actually cut the grass in a smooth uniform height. To low of a cut setting will clog the mower and create a mess. 2 times a week is a good frequency to start with.

My john deere lt 133 mower with a double blade mulching deck, 1 blade stopped working and only 1 blade cuts now, how do i fix this. Thanks Patrick

This model mulching deck uses a flat/ribbed serpentine belt that is set at very high tension. When belt breaks under the cover only one blade will turn due to IT being driven from PTO clutch as the other blade being turned from serpentine belt. This deck was Deere's first and last shot at making a true mulching deck and only made it a couple years. When you buy the VERY expensive belt it will come with detailed instructions on how to install it.Goog luck.

Can a mulching blade work in a non-mulching mower?

True Mulching mowers have a specific deck design to them, but I would say yes to your question. It's been quite a few years, but I have done this little conversion myself - replace regular blade with a mulching blade. Just make sure the mulch blade does fit your mower. Also, use something substantial in terms of strength to close the discharge opening. There can be a good deal of force placed at the opening from flying debris. You'll also want to make the cover removable, so you can mow damp grass without the cover.
