Look for white residue on the PCB or darkened solder about the SMD caps. If you spot anything that ressembles a water mark about a cap, it will need replacing. Sometimes the PCB land corrode, anything that does not look prietine, will not be. Make sure you use Pansonic caps , you can get them here

I have owned a Sony CCD-TR55E since 1993. It developed exactly the sameproblems as you described around 2000 and it had to go into a worhshopfor repaired. After dismantling it was dicovered that the guide poleswere jamming during the threading process. To cure this problem thesliding deck mechanism was removed and the guide poles re-aligned andaffixed to their driving arms and then reassembled. The cost of was £65in 2000. The repair was carried out by a Sony franchised Dealer.
After hours of laborious searching, I have found a link for a free download of a user manual for a CCD-TR55.
