I work on commercial not home refrigerators. That being said I would look on the back of the frig for a panel most of the time are about 5 inches by 5 inches and have a whole in the middle that will fit a screwdriver. The whole is to get the timer out of defrost.
If it's not there it may be down underneath with the compressor. It will be a small box with 4 or 5 wires out of it.
I hope this helps

Where is the defrost timer in a kenmore elite model 10654602300

I am pretty sure the defrost timer is built into the 8201528 Temperature Control Board

If you have questions about the defrost control plese call Repair Clinic at 1-800-269-2609, 7 a.m. to midnight ET, 7 days a week They will be glad to answer any questions you may have. As for forcing defrost on your model I am still searching for a Service Manual that covers your model. If you suspect a defrost error on this model I would check the defrost heater and defrost thermostat before changing the 8201528 Temperature Control Board Here is a link to the 106.54602300 User Manual I do know that your model is made by Whirlpool and sold to Sears. You can find the parts breakdown for your model HERE
I will be here to answer any questions you have, Thanks Sea Breeze

We have a top freezer Kenmore refrigerator which is at least 12 years old. It is cooling intermittently. It will cool everything just fine for three or four days and then it will defrost completely.

That sounds like your defrost timer is beginning to failm moving slower and sticking into the defrost cycle longer than it should. WR9X520 Defrost Timer

The defrost timer can be found inside and behind the control panel where you adjust temperature. Item 648 in this diagram is your defrost timer=> HERE Let me know should you have questions I will be here to answer them, Thanks Sea Breeze

The Freezer is frosting with ice-buildup on edge of doors and inside.

Sounds like you simply have a defrost problem going on. Without the model number that looks like this 321.456789 example I am not sure what parts you will need. If you can find your correct model number I can show you what to look for. Things that fail with a defrost problem are defrost heater, defrost thermostat and defrost control or timer, Thanks Sea Breeze

Why do I need to defrost every week?

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly. I had to do a reverse lookup of your model number and think I am close with this model number: 106.72102100 and can be found using the website. Your defrost timer is item 4 of this link:
detailed view:

It should automatically cycle your refrigerator into the defrost mode as often as 3 times a day. When the defrost timer or the defrost element (item 4 this link:
fails you will have to do a manual defrost. In addition a failed bi-metal thermostat (item 2 same link) can also cause the unit not to cycle out of the defrost cycle once it begins.

You can manually rotate the defrost timer using the 2 tabs if you kneel down and look into the overhead of the fresh food compartment. You will see a circular hole with the inclined tabs on it. Rotating this SLOWLY until the compressor shuts off or you hear a noticable click will start the defrost cycle. (Due to the inclined tabs you can only rotate it ONE direction.) The defrost cycle should self terminate after abiut 45 minutes. If it does not self terminate that indicates a problem with one of the 3 main defrost components. Timer, element or bi-metal thermostat.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Freezer works, Fridge doesn't

The defrost timer inside the fresh food compartment is most likely the problem. Need to turn the timer slowly clockwise until compressor stops. I should remain off for about 25 minutes. During that time the freezer should be in defrost. You may be able to open the freezer door and hear the crackling and sizzle of the defrost taking place. If the timer does not restart the refrigerator after 25 minutes the turn the timer clockwise again until the compressor restarts. Number 6 in photo below is the defrost timer. The replacement timer part number is 482493. Here is a photo. Thanks Sea Breeze

Ice is building in the freezer - I can manually defrost but auto doesn't seem to be working. What do I check - is this something I can fix? I'm pretty handy! Thanks! Noel

WHEN YOU JUST DON'T HAVE THE MODEL NUMBER Yes, tere are tings to check but I need the model number to help you bctter .The problem is most likely the defrost timer. I don't have your model number so I am going by what I can find about a Kenmore Elite.
The defrost timer is located most times insid the fresh food compartment and behind theconteol panel. Usually there is a hole that you can put a flathead screwdriver through and slowly turn the timer clockwise until the refrigerator compressor and fans stop. Let it stay like this for about 25 minuites until the compressor restarts. During this time the refrigerator should be in defrost. Open the freezer and listen for crackling and sizzling noise caused by defrost. If the compressor does not restart turn again clockwise and this will restart. If you nee the defrost timer here is a link below.

482493 Defrost Timer

Let me know if this don't work and we will need to go mto step 2, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Freezer is not cooling properly

Look inside the fresh food section behind and inside the control panel for a defrost timer and circuit board. Let me know when and what you find. Please unplug first, Thanks, Sea Breeze

These parts can produce a snapping or clicking sound
when turning the refrigerator on and off. The timer also
produces sounds similar to an electric clock.
