Question about Mtd 22" Yard Machine Push Mower

1 Answer

I bought a yard machine last year. When I used it for the first time it died and would not start. I noticed oil dripping. From the muffler and the air filter was soaked with oil also. I took it back and had it fixed. It had been running fine up until last week. I was using it and it just died. Now I'm smelling and seeing gasoline leaking from the muffler. What can I do to fix the problem now and the future.

SOURCE: yard machine 21'' push mower runs 2 to 3 seconds cuts off.

Tip the mower up on it's side with the dipstick tube on the down side and collect it in a suitable container. The gas you can do the same. When I drain old fuel, I mix it with a lot of fresh fuel and a bottle of dry gas then run it in my car.

SOURCE: Yard Machines 22 inch mower, I dumped it on its

if you bent the blade most likely you bent the crankshaft too.
Remove the spark plug and pull the rope and remove excess oil from the spark plug hole
check the spark plug for spark if you have none then a flywheel key is sheered a more in depth fix.
If you get it started you may notice a whole lota vibration due to a bent crank shaft or maybe not?

SOURCE: GOT GASOLINE IN OIL TANK.

Empty the tank of the tainted gasoline (Maybe add the right amount of oil and use it for a trimmer, etc), fill tank with fresh gas and clean the spark plug, since it is probably fouled out. You may have to clean the carb with some carb cleaner, and clean your plug a few extra times, but it should be fine. Hope this helps. Good luck.

SOURCE: Mower starts, but dies immediately

that's not a choke lever, it's used as a speed control on some models. the two springs are attached to the governor rod, which is attached to an "air vane" governor - on these engines, you need to keep the gas tank fairly full at all times, the dip tube on the carburetor rides up off the bottom of the gas tank, if fuel level goes lower than this tube, it won't pull any gas to the intake - from your descriptions, though, it sounds like the diapragm between the carb and gas tank has "curled". briggs had a service flash on the problem and since it's new, you should take it to a shop that does briggs warranty work - it should be covered under warranty

SOURCE: mtd 22" yard machine staryts and dies using prospray.

Remove the float bowl again and remove the BRASS Jet in the bottom of the venturi throat. Clean the pin hole of the Jet so that you can see through it. DO NOT force anything through it. Just clean it. Underneath the jet is the venturi tube itself. It is also unscrewed with a screw driver. Remove it and clean all ofthe holes in it. Then reassemble tube and jet in to the venturi. Check the BOWL NUT for 2 holes. If the holes are clogged your engine will suffer from a lack of fuel. Lastly check that you have FUEL flow from the tank to the carb. If the tank outlet hole is clogged you will also have a lack of fuel problem.

It really does sound like the exhaust or the spark arrestor is blocked ( or the exhaust port itself is carboned up ) remove the muffler, check the exhaust port, if this looks ok, run the machine with a very slack muffler aqs a test, if ir revs then it is blocked.

Getting blue smoke when I start the engine. Takes several pulls to get engine started. Also spitting a little oil out of muffler

I would say that your engine is on it's way out. It seems that you have oil getting past your piston rings and the exhaust valve, and out the muffler. Your engine could last another season, or one more month. You could rebuild it yourself, or have it done by someone else. But it could get expensive. Check the oil often. Put in thicker oil like10w-40. You may be surprised how long it may run.
I'm sorry I was not able to give you a better solution. GOOD LUCK.

The running time seems to indicate a plugged fuel tank vent. Try opening the cap to see if that will allow continued running. Many engines have the vent within the cap itself, while others vent from the air cleaner through a line. Ignore the fuel drip on the adjustment screw. Hope this helps!

Mantis 4 cycle (brand new): oil leaking out, smoking soaking air cleaner, quits running..

Sounds like your gas tank is not breathing properly. try this: the next time you run the tiller and it begins to stall out, try loosening the gas cap. It should start running again. This means that the gas cap is clogged. Unclog it or purchase another one.
