Misfire codes (including P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307 & P0308) indicate that there is a misfire in a cylinder, the last number indicates which cylinder has the problem. If something is causing a miss in random cylinders or is affecting all of them, a P0300 misfire code will be stored in the car's computer. It's always smart to begin with the basics. Also consider the mileage and service history when diagnosing a misfire. Higher mile vehicles are more inclined to have mechanical issues with the engines, like low compression from worn valves or rings etc. Any accompanying codes should also be considered in case they may be related. If the spark plugs are worn (excessive gap) or the car is past due for a tune up, it may be smart to go ahead and start with spark plugs and spark plug wires and go from there.
The most common misfire causes on the cars I've worked on have been:

  1. Spark plugs
  2. Spark plug wires
  3. Ignition coil
  4. Fuel injector
  5. Wiring to fuel injector
  6. Timing Belt
  7. Vacuum leak or stuck open EGR
  8. Contaminated fuel or bad fuel pump
  9. Weak compression
  10. Blown head gasket

I need help with my 1999 chevy silverado 1500 5.3 4x4 I have a rough idle like its only running on 7 cylinders here are some of the things I've done to try and resolve this issue, changed fuel filter

you need to isolate which cylinder it is first may help.
while running use insulated pliers to pull each plug wire off plug or cap separately, you will hear idle change/drop when a good cylinder is pulled. it will not change when not firing cylinder is pulled. now u got the cylinder and can double check plug, wire connections there. see if that wire sparks on a ground or plug to check spark and eliminate that issue. if you get a zap you need a better insulated pliers, but you know that wire is good. Remember the 3 things needed on all engines- Spark, Fuel, Air. oh yes and Compression. if you have spark, then have cylinder compression tested 120-150psi is still good. 80psi sucks and you have bad rings or valves., fuel cleaner may help in that situation, rare fix, but cheaper than a new engine.

I have a '97 chevy tahoe. the engine cranks, but won't start. checked trouble codes & got cycliner misfire, O2 sensor, & catalytic converter codes. i've replaced plugs & wires. still won't...

first, check all the fuses
did you check to see if there's spark at spark plugs?
did you check the fuel pressure? you need to do that to isolate fuel and ignition system.
if there is no fuel then check for fuel pump operation
if there is no spark then check the ignition system (coil, module and wirings)
if you don't have either one then the problem is in the computer system such as crank sensor, and computer itself

We've replaced the distributor cap and rotor in our 1985 Chevy C10 305 V8 and still have to fire TO the plugs. It won't start

This is a one piece distributor. It has the coil and pickup sensor all built in. Check and see if you have 12 volts on the large red wire that plugs into the cap while the key is on. (The other wire is for a tachometer if you have one). If you have power and there is no spark from your ignition wires, your pickup module is bad in the distributer. Very rarely have I seen a failed coil.

I keep getting a P0300 diagnostic code on my 1996 chevy corsica what could be the cause for this

its a random misfire if it had a number at end instead of 0 e.i. 1 that would indicate number 1 cylinder misfired/ but 300 with no other codes can be multi reasons check spark plugs and wires--coils--clogged injectors--fuel filter--fuel pump--bag gas(water) partial clog cat converter these are a few but best to start with plugs &wires
