The symptoms you describe are common signs of a failed (or failing) magnetron. The magnetron is the heart of the microwave oven and is the component that generates the RF energey required to heat food. Using the oven in a prolonged state with a magnetron that isn't firing properly can cause damage to the wave guide assembly as well. If this problem just occurred, you may want to go to any of the following websites and search their prices for what a new magnetron may cost:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

All these sites are reputable and offer competitive pricing, so shop and compare. The first three websites have helpful exploded view parts diagrams to assist you with locating and properly identifying any parts you may need.

Magnetron prices will vary between manufacturers and model numbers. Some prices are as low as $30 or $40, while others are as high as $200. The cost of replacement parts, alone, can determine whether or not the appliance is worth repairing. If you call a repairman, there will be an added cost of labor. If you wish to perform this repair yourself, please post back and let me know BEFORE you attempt to disassemble a microwave oven. There are certain safety precautions that you need to know prior to servicing anything inside.

NOTE: Most appliances come with a one year limited warranty from the manufacturer. However, some manufacturers have extended warranties on certain parts. You may take a look at any warranty information that may have come with the appliance to see if there's anything the manufacturer may cover.

Sounds like the magnetron has failed. This is the component that produces the microwaves that heats the food.

The cost of the magnetron is about 95% of the cost of a microwave oven. Most people don't, for this reason, replace the magnetron, they replace the whole oven which is probably what you will end up doing.

There is a possibility that the circuit that provides power to the magnetron is faulty and you need to take it apart, find the proper electrical leads and test them with a volt meter. To do this you have to remove it from its mounting and take it apart. It is a fairly lengthy process however.

Q - The microwave display counts down and the inside light is on,  but nothing is heating and the fan is not running.
A - This most commonly is a bad door switch, other possible problems are a faulty relay or solder joint on the power module, but a bad door switch is most common.
Q - My microwave is running and sounds like it is working but will not heat up anything.
A - Many thing can do this but, common things are....loose high voltage wire.....poor solder joint on board.....magnetron.....power relay.....
Q - The microwave makes a loud "hum or buzz" noise but will not heat up the food?
A - 9 times out of 10 this is usually this is a bad magnetron, the other time is sometimes a bad high voltage diode. See components section.

GE Spacemaker XL1800(JVM1850CF001) - Loud Humming noise

You either have a bad magnetron tube (5 or 10 year parts warranty item through GE Factory Service 1-800-432-2737 or www.geappliances.com) or a shorted high voltage rectifier. I think the light being out is a secondary problem.

Microwave makes loud noise and does not heat. Smell of light burning

The noise is coming from the high-voltage transformer being overloaded by something shorting it out. Either the magnatron or the high-voltage capacitor and diode. Replace the capacitor and diode then if still not working, replace the magnatron. Its only affordable if you do it yourself - buy the part on EBAY - lookup "universal magnatron"
Hope ya fix it!
