DSL wired means that the DSL router is connected to the NIC port of your computer. In this case it also depends on the speed of the ethernet card. Try to change the network card to a faster one. The version of the Windows does not matter, Nor is it dependent on the power of the processor. It is purely dependent on the capabilities of the network hardware. Best would be if you could get the router changed to wireless and attatch a WiFi dingle to your PC. You would get a good speed and you would also be able to connect your wifi enabled phone, laptop etc. I do not know if it is possible or not at your place under your plan. Try it.

What is happening with AOL? I have been having lots of pop ups, slow computer and AOL telling me they are having problems? My computer very slow?

Is you computer slow when using software offline? If so, it is either AOL or your internet. Don't judge the speed strictly by going to AOL. Go to Speakeasy Speed Test and test your internet speed. If that shows your internet is running at the speed you are paying for, it si AOL having trouble. You don't say which browser you are using, but most browsers have an option to block pop-ups. Make sure it is on.
Run a virus scan on your PC to see if it is infected. Also defrag your hard drive to speed it up some.

Tip

Check your broadband speed and report it as a Slow/Not Spot

I have a maximum download (connection) speed of 3.5MB at my exchange which is a Local Loop Unbundling or LLU from which I live about 5km as the crow files.

My expected maximum will be only 70% of this at about 2.5MB due to signal to noise ratio loss on the BT line, dont bother trying to change your MTU or any TCP tweak settings you will probably cause more problems with the speed becoming lower maybe even cutting yourself off your own broadband connection

However most ISP use Local Loop Unbundling is the process by which third party networkoperators are able to install equipment in to BT telephone exchanges in order to provide their own services without having to touch BT's network. Only the copper pair from the exchange to the premises, which remains the property of BT, is used by the third party. Use SamKnowsBest to check what options you have at your local BT exchange

BT copper line MAX is only 8MB irrespective of the the LLU that you use this means your ISP hardware.

Optical Cables MAX is 20MB and only Virgin Media in the UK can use this transmission medium.

I used to get only 750kbps which is not even 1MB now I can get double that between about 1500kbps - 1800kbps which is still only 1.8MB depending upon the time of day.

Also make sure that your connection is not shared with another user they will steal your bandwidth ensure that if you are using wireless use a WEP or even better a WPA-PSK encryption. Close all instances of P2P or FTP uploading during the speed test.

My Results as a comparision

http://speed.io/backend/result/24801225?pID=project1 750 Kbps
http://speed.io/backend/result/27957779?pID=project1 1500 Kbps
http://speed.io/backend/result/27959284?pID=project1 1800 Kbps

There is not a lot you can do other than report this slow speed to this website the more they can build up a picture of the bad or NOT SPOT areas then your ISP will have to act to ensure that you don't move your service to another provider.

NOTE:
If you have the same problem as me then unless you can get Virgin Media Cable that can supply upto 20MB download speeds then BT maximum 8MB speed will be your limit expect to get about 4MB using the BT copper wired pair and your ISP's own router if you live over 5 miles from the exchange.

Internet has become ridiculously slow over wifi

Unfortunately so many things can interfere with wireless technology - Microwaves, Electricity Cords, Computers, Etc. Unfortunately wireless also struggles to travel through floors and certain types of walls etc.

It may be the floor, combined with the distance from the router, as well as the electrostatic field that the electricity wiring in your house may start up.

Best thing to do would be to wire up an extender upstairs and you should be out to extend your wireless signal, and get a good download speed.

I need internet at my house. Can you provide internet connections?

we here at fixya dont have any internet service products at this time but i would recommend that you research what you want to do like just web browsing or heavy downloading then look into if you want slow speeds like dial up or high speed like broadband several places offer cheap dial up internet like aol or netzero or if you want to pay abit more money then go with a high speed provider like quest or comcast

Adsl modem giving very slow and intermittent internet connection

this is not a problem with ur PC or router this could be in the Filter or splitter that ur ISP gave you, what i would do is call ur ISP and have them run a line test that could be the reason
i work for att. and that does happen ALOT you can also go to
www.speakeasy.net go to the bottom you should see whats my speed or test ur speed click on that and select a server closest to you and it will run a speed test up and download speed

good luck ,

Internet connection for vista

unfortunately, there is nothing that you can copy and transfer from your XP based desktop. The best solution is to call your provider and ask them for a Vista driver update for your usb modem.

Hope this helps.

Optus adsl2 is slow

Unfortunately most problems like this are caused by poor telephone line quality which makes it a BT problem. See if your neighbours are getting faster ADSL speeds. IF they are then report an ADSL fault to BT. Also try disconnecting your house wiring right back to the master socket and test your ADSL from there. Remember that the ADSL connection is only between your computer and your local BT sub-exchange from there to the rest of the internet is a high speed pipe shared between all the ISP's used in your area, the various ISP's just rent a portion of the bandwith of the pipe.
