Question about Maytag Neptune FAV6800AW Top Load Washer

1 Answer

We bought a neptune TL in 2005. In Feb. 2010 it flashed letters of which I don't remember now what they were. We called Maytag and they sent a new control panel to a local appliance shop for repair. this was done at quite an expense. Just last week the washer started flashing ' od ' and not working. We called Maytag and was informed that our " 90 " day warrenty was up. They suggested we try unplugging it for 5 minutes then plugging it back in. This worked for 2 or 3 washes and then flashed the ' od ' sign again. To make a long story short this has happened two more times since the first time last week. We're afraid we're living on borrowed time with this washer. Is there any maintenence we're not doing or is there anythin we can do about this?

I'm afraid I'm having trouble understanding the directions. I went to page 34, am I supposed to dissassemble the part? I went to page 14 but I didn't see a "quick svc. cycle on the washer, is that the quick wash setting? I pushed the quick wash setting and it showed no letters, so I pushed start and right now it's going through its cycle.

  • earl5655 Aug 24, 2010

At 7:20pm I pressed both Enviro Plus and spin keys until a tone. The display went to OO and the start/pause button went to flashing. At 7:22 washer display went to 30 and start/pause was still flashing. At 7:26 the display of 30 went off and no letters came up, it went blank, also the start/pause button stopped flashing. I don't know length of svc. cycle but I assume by 7:49 it is done. The washer is showing no letters or numbers so I don't know current status. It never showed a " PA ".

  • earl5655 Aug 24, 2010

I followed instructions, I the ' d ' came up and I cycled down to the first display that showed up which was A1.

  • earl5655 Aug 24, 2010

9:09 I folled instructions. I pressed hand wash, lid did lock. Numbers went from high to low and back again during the cycle but at no time did any codes come up.Display stopped at 00. What does this ultimatley mean? What should I do if 2 or 3 washes from now it flashes " od " again? I don't want to buy another control board. Should we just keep unplugging washer and see how long we can make it last? If this washer breaks down again we're going to buy another brand of washer?

  • earl5655 Aug 26, 2010

I waited until today to wash clothes I put load in and pushed normal wash, then start and immediatly it flashed " od " after all we did the other nite. I unplugged for 5 min. and started it up and it worked. After all we did what is your final analysis on what we can do to fix this problem? From what I understand from the other nite, you don't think it's the control board; but the lid lock mechanism? Did you think a cleaning of some sort to it would fix the prpblem,or does it have to be replaced? Also how long do you think we can get away with unplugging the washer every time " od " flashes?

Hi there. This od code is in reference to the lid switches. The code is basically stating that the lid has not been opened for the last three completed cycles. That definition will boil down to two possible faults. This will be a door lock lid assembly fault or a failed control board logical sector. The necessary action are to test the lid lock mechanism, asap. If that mechanism passes its respective test, you will need to replace the main control board again. i have included below a link to the service manual for your unit. This manual will explain the actual testing procedure and how to access the affected components. Follow the lid lock testing procedure carefully to isolate the culprit.

Neptune TL Service Manual Link

NOTE_ The lid lock/reed switch removal process will be located on page 34 in the manual provided above. You can test it for its integrity by running the diagnostic cycle as directed in the manual on page. Once you have entered the service as stated on the middle left side of page 14, kindly select the quick service cycle that is illustrated on the lower left side of page 15. This will be a quick check of all systems. If display shows od then open and close lid. Pressing Quick Wash will advance to the next cycle. If a diagnostic code is logged during the test, the right most dot will turn on and stay on until quick service cycle test has ended. Any diagnostic code logged during this
test will result in failure of the test, but will not necessarily
stop the test. If the letters PA are set, that will indicate that the machine has passed the test.

Ok, do not remove the lid/reed switch assembly at this time. You will need to preform the diagnostic test first to confirm the failure. Follow the procedure below to achieve:

To enter Service Mode press the Enviro Plus and Spin Only keys for three seconds or until the control beeps. While in Service Mode, pressing the Wash/Rinse Temp key will start a Quick Service Cycle. This will be a quick check of all systems. If display shows od then open and close lid. Let the unit run its course and if the letters PA are displayed at the end, it will indicate that all systems are ok. If a code is detected, there iwll be a small dot on the display and the cycle will end. You can check the code after the diagnostic cycle completes.

Ok, apparently there was an error codes stored. I will need you to enable the service mode once more and pull up the initial codes that were stored during that diagnostic run. The diagnostic code display can be toggled on and off from Service Mode by pressing the Wrinkle Control key. The display will show a “d”. The diagnostic codes can be viewed by using the Set Delay Time arrow keys. The Set Delay Time down arrow key will cycle down the list one code at time each time it is pushed. The Set Delay Time up arrow key will cycle up the list one code each time it is pushed. The first time the Set Delay Time down arrow key is pushed, the newest code will be displayed. A code generated during or after the current cycle will be displayed with the right most dot “.” turned “ON”.

Let me know which code comes up. We are looking for the newest codes that were just stored. It should be one code, preferably the door lid code.

Ok.That is not what I expected. You already replaced the board recently, but that is a board fault code. This is unfortunate. I want to confirm the board fault. This is the last test. I will need you to once more enter the service mode. Once in service mode, press the Hand Wash key to start a Quick Spin Test. Upon the initial spin test actions, the lid should lock. and the test will begin its steps. observe the led read out panel for any codes that may be displayed during the test. If it runs through the test completely, this will exclude the faults as a false warning and the unit will be fine. If there is another code stored and the test stops, that will confirm that the board will need to be replaced once again.

Ok, there is no fault here at this time. the lid should be left open for a 5 minute period with the control still in the on position. Once the 5 minutes are up, close the lid securely, and shutdown the control. This will correct the od code. With that said; if it dose show once again in the future, simply, replace the lid/reed switch assembly as directed in the manual. Due to the fact that no codes came up during the last test, leads me to believe that the lid assembly was dirty or the control needed to register an open lid signal before resetting the program. There are no damaged components at this time so I think the unit will be ok, for now.

Great job on the diagnostic testing procedures. You have officially completed you initial service tech training filed test:) A+

Everything should be fine now with your unit. Just monitor the cycles if you can and try not to overload the tub. The clutch assembly on this unit is very fragile as well as the motor circuits.

Maytag Neptune TL

The TL neptune has a small shock absorber on the middle left hand corner behind the front panel. it uses a small wiring clip that could be loose, with a type of inertia switch.
A common issue I've encountered with this machine is underloading. The snubber and springs allow a fair amount of movement. Don't do a few simple items or mixed load in this machine.
If these don't seem to help, let us know.

Maytag Neptune TL clutch problems- Class Action Lawsuit??

I sounds like this is a common problem with the Maytag Neptune TL after about 3-5 years. Mine finally went out yesterday after several months of bearings getting louder all of the time. It looks like the bearings and the controller are gone. What happened to washing machines that last 15 - 20 years?

You were apparently sent the wrong part; the serial# is important when ordering these parts. You need to repl the failed part- which I assume is the membrane switch, not the actual machine control. Please contact me if you need further help or leave feedback if appropriate as that is how I get paid. Thanks for letting me help you!
