Hi,
System error zoom message shows some thing wrong in lens mechanism and it is not user level repair/ fix.
Camera will take apart, lens assembly will be replaced to resolve the issue and all that process need expertise of qualified camera tech.
Camera seems newer model so I think it would be under warranty, do not any attempt to do it yourself as it will void warranty. It is in your best interest to call number written on warranty papers of Store or Panasonic for warranty cover.
Hope these info will help you.
Thanks.

Some problems..- with a hard reset or power cycle or whatever can be successfully fixed by the owner..i didnt intend to take the thing apart i was hoping to find someone familiar with this error and the cause to tell what the cause(s) are and if there is anything a user can do.

First off how long have you owned the camera if it is less then 12 months old then go through the warranty repair process on panasonic's web page:
http://panasonic.net/support/gscn/
If you need any other assistance let me know.
Thank you,
Lee

Why would you fix it when it is under warranty? These camera's have a ton of small parts in them and are not meant for the average consumer to repair it. That is why should go through the warranty if it's less then a year old. That is the answer.

What is the exact error message you receive based on the information you gave me a "zoom" error, this can be the mechanism that zooms itself, the zoom motor, or the alignment got knocked off. Either way it is under warranty so no matter what the error means you should send it in for warranty repair.
    Thank you,

System error Zoom

Lens errors (system error zoom on Panasonics) are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:
