Question about GE 25.0 Cu. Ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator with Thru-the-Door Ice and Water - Black-on-Black
If you need to defrost the refrigerator, means the the defrost circuit has stopped working. There is a evaporator coil in the freezer. It's job it to cool the freezer compartment and indirectly cool the refrigerator by using a fan to blow cold air into the refrigerator.
Since the evaporator coil temperture is typically below freezing, frost develops on the coil. To remove the frost, the refrigerator has a defrost timer or module that shuts down the compressor periodically and turns on heating element through a defrost thermostat. This heating element is physically mounted to the coil and heat it up to about 50 F when the thermostat turns off the heater.
Typical problems with the defrost are the heating element breaks, the defrost timer fails to advance, and the defrost thermostat does not close.
I would check the heating element first. To get access to the coil/element, you will need to empty the lower portion of the freezer. In the lower back of the freezer compartment is the panel that covers the coil. Take the panel off, and you should be able to see the coil. Use a hair dryer to melt the ice. The heating element will either look like a piece of black wire or like al long glass tube. Use a meter and attach it to the heating element contacts to determine if it has opened. If it has then replacing it should solve your problem, If it is good, then the problem lies either with the defrost timer or the thermostat. If you still have questions, leave me a comment and I will try to clarify things for you. Hope this helps you.
