To me, this sounds like a video problem. If the lights on the computer are lit when you turn it on, but no video is showing, either the screen or video card is bad. Hold a flashlight to the screen when the computer is on. If you can see a faint picture, then the bulb in the screen is bad, and the whole screen needs replacement. Search on eBay for the model number of your computer (i.e. Dell XXX screen). You can get them at fairly reasonable prices. There are many tutorials on YouTube regarding replacing a screen:
If you see nothing with the flashlight trick, then either the video cable or video card is bad. You can get video cables on eBay using the above-mentioned method.
Since most video cards are integrated with the motherboard of the laptop, a bad video card is often in need of a motherboard replacement. These can be spendy, but worth it depending on the value of your machine. Consult a local repair shop for more details.
