Question about Hayward S220t Top Mount Pro Series Sand Filter 22" Tank Include Top Mount Valve

1 Answer

I have an inground pool with a Hayward S220T Pro Series Sand Filter. During normal operation, I am getting sand in the pool, through the inlet vents. I am wondering what the problem could be. I suspect the spider-like laterals in the filter are to blame. What do you think? Thanks. Scott

You would be correct; replace them with part number SX220DA and you should be all set. If the sand is older than 3 seasons, replace it too while you have to empty the filter.

Yes, the sand definitely needs to be replaced. I have had the same problem. Chlorine calicifies and leaves deposits in the sand.
Filtering the water wit excess deposits creates those spider channels. Sand breaking away from these channels when the sand is calcified leaves loose deposits in the pool. Good Luck.

Hello, when i vacuum my inground pool using a hayward filter....it cleans the pool but the next day sand forms on the bottom of the pool...this was a constant problem last year....what may be causing this?...

If sand is getting back into the pool, the strainer in the filter is broken or out of place. The filter has to be disassembled, sand must be removed and the strainer must be inspected for cracks or leakage. New parts are available from most pool supply stores.

Inground with hayward pro series we replaced lateral and sand all was fine 2 months have passed and now i have sand in pool again

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

First of all, are you certain it is sand? We have received many a phone call claiming sand is back in a pool only to find yellow algae instead. If it is sand again you will need to look at the lateral assembly again. If you didn't add the sand correctly last time you may have cracked a lateral and it has now moved enough to allow sand out. If it is only a small amount of sand inspect the bottom of the multiport valve. Backwashing can bring a small amount of sand into the valve and if you do not rinse the valve following backwash you can get small amounts of sand in the pool.

If this answer does not fix your problem, please comment with additional details prior to rating the answer. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

How do I change the sand in my Hayward S220t Top Mount Pro Series Sand Filter

un-screw the entire top valve unit. I would duct tape over the top of the riser pipe at the top.You do not want to get any sand inside that pipe. Turn upside downand rinse out completely. Add new sand remove duct tape and replace top valve unit

I need to change the sand in a hayward model 711 sand filtration system. Are there any instructions for this out there?

While there is a model 711 Hayward Valve assembly, the actual filter is a different model number. You might be able to find your model here...
