This worked for me today 8/29/10

A much easier way to clean the mirror.
Thanks to:

Basically, you power off the printer and unscrew the screw which allows you to remove the small piece of glass to the left of the main scanning glass.

Using some needle-nosed pliers through the opening, grasp the drive belt and use it to move the scanning head across from the right hand side of the scanning area to the left, until it is right under the opening. At the bottom of the wide slot, there is a mirror, and it gets fogged up with something.

Shine a good light in there and use dry Q-tips to give the mirror a good clean. Then reassemble everything and turn the printer back on. After a little warm-up, you should get the Ready€™ prompt again, and your heart will be filled with joy.

The whole process should only take about 5 mins. There may be other things which cause a scanner error, but this fixed it for me and, it would appear, for many others.

It sounds as the lamp is stuck, if you open the cover do you see the lap nudging alittle back and front?

This might be fixyable by opening up the cover and clearing the jam.

or if the bulb is faulty it would need to be replaced but in most cases, people just buy a new scanner / printer becouse the repair price goes around the price of a new printer.

Do I need a new scanner bulb?

It sounds very much as if the scanner is faulty/failed. The warming-up phase is to ensure that the scanner lamps output is steady, making for consistent scans. Usually this is just a simple timing circuit.
Having once tried to fix a broken flatbed scanner myself, I found that obtaining the correct replacement lamp for it was impossible - I think inkjet printers and scanners are considered "consumable". You may be better off buying a new printer. Alternatively, if it keeps producing good prints, consider buying a separate scanner. HTH

Hello, The scanner & photocopier were not working and the screen was just stuck on the "scanner bulb warming up". Then, after days of trouble shooting, it finally began making a noise,...

From what you described it sounds like you need to get the "scanner assembly" replaced.
The bulb is probably bad and won't come on to full power.
Not knowing what kind of printer you have, probably won't change the fix. If you can look at the event log you may be able to see an error code which could make it a definite scanner assembly replacement.
If you want to throw money at this unknown printer, get a tech to look at it and give you an estimate.

Scanner light stays on

I have the same problem. I chatted with HP customer care for an hour but it can't be fixed. The only thing you can do now is set the power saver mode to 2 hours, so bulb will turn off in 2 hours. Only way to minimum power consume.
