This would be the Mouse, or over senstive touch pad, its picking up error movement or its over senstive, in this case you go to your control panel under mouse your going to adjust the senstivity.

This is common in this type of issue and does need to be looked at, if you tried this already you might want to try to disable the mouse (touchpad)

If that does not work you might have actual keyboard issue like a key being held down.

Check these areas and get back to me.

I'll move the cursor to one spot on the desktop and it will move itself to another....windows 7

You mean, the cursor is erratic and moving all around here and there?

Decrease the Touchpad Sensitivity...

I see that your Laptop was shipped with Windows Vista and it seems you are using a Retail version of Windows 7. Specially, HP/Compaq Laptops is designed for Retail versions and you can face some device/driver functionality issues. But, you can still try the followings.

As per my knowledge, your Laptop has the Synaptics Toucpad.

To Change the Sensitivity of the Touchpad:
1. Right-click on the desktop and select Personalize > Mouse Pointers . The Mouse Properties settings window will open.

2. Select the Device Settings tab. Select the Synaptics TouchPad device and click Settings. In the Properties for Synaptics TouchPad window, expand the Sensitivity topic.
3. Select the PalmCheck option to adjust the sensitivity (decrease it) of the touchpad to avoid erratic cursor movement caused by accidental touching of the pad during normal typing.

If the Device Setting tab is missing.....

1. Click Start, in the Start search field type Msconfig and press enter.

"System Configuration Utility" box will pop up on the screen.

2. Click the Startup tab.
3. Search for "Syntpenh" entry and select the checkbox beside it.
5. Click OK. Restart the computer. Perform above step.

If you are still not able to perform the steps, update the driver from following link.

Synaptics TouchPad Driver: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp44501-45000/sp44969.exe

Restart the Notebook and check for the problem. It should be resolved now.

Hi Barry,

You open up Google and search for touchfreeze. It fixes erratic cursor movements. Download and install it and your mouse pointer will stop moving as it wills.

While I am typing on the keyboard the cursor will skip around in my document. I find that if I do not watch closeley, my indented document is a mess. All the parts are there but they are scrambled.

A couple things can cause this to happen....

1. While you're typing, your hand or thumb might be hitting the mouse area near the keyboard which causes the mouse to move around.
2. You could have some heavy resource program running in the background which slows the system down.
3. You have an infrared mouse without a proper mouse pad so the infrared causes the light to bounce around causing issues.
4. A virus :(

Erratic Cursor Behavior

Are you sure your not touching the pad as you type , a common error, cover the pad with card board or plastic and see.
otherwise you may have a bad touchpad and it needs replaced or re-seated on the cable.
