Question about Kenmore 94042 Dryer

1 Answer

I have a Kenmore 90 series electric dryer. Recently, I have noticed that the cloths gets wedged (or caught) along the baffles. It falls and gets picked up by another baffle. I start hearing thud, thud. The cloths then won't finish drying and comes out in a creased damp lump. It happens when there are fewer items in the dryer. Can you please tell me what is causing this? We thought purhaps the drum was turning too slowly. Also, is it something I could fix? I'm pretty handy. I took apart my washer and replaced many parts. Thanks, Lisa

It sounds like you have two problems
ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR DRYER BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DO ANY WORK ON IT.
Problem 1...
Sounds like your problem may be a front door seal is faulty.
If you have a front loading machine.
Remove the lint filter screws and filter.
Remove the top of the dryer by prying up on the front of the lid at the corners to pop the top up and lean it back on the hinges.

Then lift/move the top of the dryer to the rear to expose the drum.
Remove the front of the machine, this will expose the belt and drum, remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers, idler arm bracket with pulley, and motor with pulley. Pay attention to the route of the belt, this will come in handy when you go to reinstall the belt and drum.
Sometimes the belt will slip off of the idler arm or motor causing the drum not to turn.
You can now replace the front door seal or repair it if possible.

While you have the drum out, I would recommend that you lubricate the drum rollers at the shaft of the roller with a good grade of machine oil like 3 in One oil. This will save you a problem later with the rollers getting noisy, also check your drum rollers for flat spots, if they have flat spots on them this will cause a noise like a thumping type noise. You will need to replace the drum rollers if they have flat spots on them.
I included a link to YouTube to also help you with this

Problem 2...
ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR DRYER BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DO ANY WORK ON IT.
Check to make sure you are getting full 220 Volt power to the dryer, if you are then:
Sounds like your problem may be with the heating coil. Remove the back of the machine or sometimes the front of the machine below the door and try to locate the air duct going from the blower to the drum. Normally inside the air duct you will find the heating coil and the thermostats/thermistor. Once you have located the heating coil, remove the two wires from it and check the coil with an ohm meter across the two terminals of the coil.
You should read continuity across the terminals, if not you will need to replace the coil as it is faulty.
If the heating coil is ok, then:
You can check the thermostat/thermistor by removing the two wires and taping them together with electrical tape. If the coil heats up then replace
the thermostat/thermistor.
DO NOT LEAVE THE WIRES TAPED TOGETHER AFTER THE TEST.
This could cause a FIRE, as you have removed the safety of overheat from the machine.

could be coins in the baffles, sometimes coins make it into your dryer, and they slide under the baffles, remove or open the top of your unit and you will see the screws that hold on each baffle, remove the screws and the baffle will come off inside the dryer with whatever is in there. then re-secure the baffles..

Clothes get caught in-between the drum and where the drum rest at the front of the dryer and all the cloths have rust colored mark on them.

What is happening is the drum moves parallel to the door opening and drum liner. When the drum shaft gets wear, the drum tilts away from the drum liner. This creates a space through which your clothes fall into. The drum turns and your clothes wedge in this gap and become damaged from rubbing the interior liner.
To fix this is simple. Remove the front dryer cover and there will be 3 screws holding the drum to the shaft. There are plastic bushings to replace and then your drum will fit tightly against the liner. It may be a good time to replace the liner to insure a good seal.
Remember to turn off the gas at the appliance or unplug the electricity to the unit.
Servall is a supplier of appliance parts, and the Service dept. of Sears fir Kenmore, etc.
It should take an experienced repairman with the tools between 1 and 2 hours to fix.

When the start button is pressed and held down the dryer will run but when the button is not being held dowm the dryer cuts off. What could that be? It is a Kenmore 90 Plus Series Even Heat Dryer

i would say that it is in the "lockup" circuit in your motor. there is a centifugal switch which moves when it senses RPM of the motor which then in turn closes a set of contacts within the motor housing, thus locking the run contacts to keep your motor running. odds are that the switch, (which moves along the motor shaft) is dry or blocked by debris (lint) that gets caught in the motor housing.
a good cleaning and then a shot of lube on the shaft usuallly solves this problem....
good luck; jay
