No LAN Just bought this board because it has 4 PCI slots. It is out of production so can't be replaced. On-board LAN doesn't work. Ethernet cable lights up the connection both on the board and the router, but when I run the BIOS SMART LAN test it can't find the connection. All I get is a cryptic message "cable length less than 10M." I am afraid the only solution may be to disable it and install either a PCI or USB LAN. Will this work? If I disable the LAN do I also have to disable the 1394? Advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks. I will try this, but I think the problem is with the on-board LAN itself, rather than drivers. As I wrote above The failed test for the presence of the LAN connection is at the BIOS level before any OS or drivers are installed.

Rather than fuss around with this, I have ordered a lan card which will use up one of my valuable PCI slots--motherboards no longer come with enough of these. If this doesn't solve the problem, I will have to replace the board.

Computer ethernet port

Try different cable, modem, router, but seriously if its the actual lan connector on the motherboard that is bad, buy a new motherboard.

Check the warranty on the PC.

You can always but a lan card, see what you have for PCI slots on your motherboard and buy a card from Newegg.

It is not worth fixing an onboard lan.(ethernet) one that's built onto the board.

Look at these.

M3N78-VM LAN PORT& PCI PROBLEM

1) How do you know that PCI slot is not working? Tried another PCI expansion card in it? Perhaps another LAN adapter card?
(Ethernet Card)

A LAN adapter card will go bad before a PCI slot will.

2) PCI expansion slot is bad? No other PCI slot to use?
Then here is a suggestion,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3504463&csid=_61

Plug it into any available USB port on the computer.
It is a GigaByte Ethernet solution, also. (10/100/1000)

The Ethernet port of my Asus M4a77td motherboard stopped working. I think it is a hardware problem because when I plug the router cable on the port, the corresponding light on the router does not turn on...

Yeah, the link light on the router should be coming on.
A few simple things to try:
Try a different network cable. Try a different port on the router. Visually inspect the port on the system and router to confirm they are not physically damaged in any way.

My lan driver not work

Go to the following link, select your operating system then download it & install. http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Chipsets&ProductLine=Desktop+Chipsets&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+865+Chipset+Family
After installing, right click on My computer, Hardware, Device manager. Check Any thing in yellow color in Network adapters or in any place. If it is related to network then, re-install Operating system & try. If nothing is in yellow color then the Ethernet port i.e., LAN port is gone bad replace the same & insert new LAN port in other slot i.e., PCI slot & install the driver & check. I hope it will work for you.

Install ethernet card optiplex gx260

That slot is actuall not accessable externaly. The open bay is for the AGP slot right next to it. Directly to the left of that slot you have a riser board the provides 2 additional horzontally mounted pci slots. You'll have to use one of these.

On board lan & pci slots are not working . on board lan also not showing in device manager.

Was the board recently struck by lightning? I've had several problems where lightning struck the motherboard through the lan ports, while not destroying the board itself, but just the lan port, and usually not showing up in device manager gives it away.

You will have to replace the motherboard if this is the case

Home networking.

do you have a pci network adapter intalled with the proper drivers ? did you plug in ethernet cable directly into current pci lan card it will be located on lower part of back of computer? this will eliminate the problems with the router just to see if pci lancard is working or not . if the lan card is working unplug cable and plug in router and then try with router plugged in u might need to reset the router in order for it to work with lan card . if ur using and onboard lan eg attached to the motherboard then you must go into computer bios and enable onboard lan and then the ethernet cable should work with no problem good luck i hope this helps you get up and going getback to me if there are future problems.
