Hi there!

How long have you been using it? Was it the first time that you encountered that problem? Can you describe specifically what sound it creates?

Clicking noise

the 'clicking' sound might be a defective hard drive, which also explains some of those other issues.seems that perhaps a local computer tech can easily identify that, and then you may need to do a hard drive recovery exercise to recover hard data.

Sony VAIO PCG-28l appears to boot up and makes the Windows opening sound but monitor stays completely blank.

Monitor could be blown - no picture or your hard drive might be fried. At boot up look continually tap the F8 key until you get to the "Safe Mode" screen. Choose to boot into safe mode and see if that works. If it doesn't - its either the monitor or the hard drive.

There are some other recovery options depending on which version of windows you are using.

Sounds like you've got a problem with your hard drive.

An easy way to troubleshoot your system would be to (ON A WORKING COMPUTER)

Download and burn a copy of UBUNTU

Boot the non-working computer with the UBUNTU disc, check the top under PLACES to see if your hard drive and files appear.

If you need more help, let me know. There's a lot to cover.

Almost sounds like your wizard ended up coping everything to your new hard drive. And when you do this usually it causes the copied system to not boot. What you need to do is put your old hard drive in the system and make it the secondary drive and then get the new hard drive and make it the primary hard drive. When you do this you need to install Windows from your Operating System disc if you have one. Once you do this you can put all then needed data from your old hard drive onto then new one. Usually the one and only thing people need on the old hard drive is the documents and settings folder it will usually have everything you have ever saved to your computer unless you have things elsewhere like directly on the c drive instead of on the desktop or in your documents. If you need further assistance don't hesitate to reply.

Sony vaio 640 hard drive

You can use any brand you like, as long as it matches the type of plug setup as the original hard drive i.e. PATA (IDE), or SATA (Serial ATA)

Black screen freeze

You need to purchase a new hard drive because the one that you currently have is burned out. So go to a computer store and get a new hard drive and get windows installed on it and you should be just fine.

Sony Vaio desktop will not load windows

what your describing is a hard disk failure the computer cant or wont read the hard disk to boot the machine, so it shuts down. Sounds like the hard disk died from a bad virus. and the computer wont run. Best I can do for you is either format the Hard disk and reinstall the operating system or buy a new hard disk. Cheers

Adding a IDE hard drive

It appears that your system has one ide controller for the optical drives, and one sata controller for the hard disk(s).

I recommend installing another SATA drive, the controller in your system is SATA150, so don't spend any extra for a SATA II (300) interface, though if you find a good deal on one, there's no harm in using it, they're backwards compatible to SATA I.  I've been seeing 500gig SATA drives on sale for around 100$.
