Low virtual memory

Virtual memory means you're running out of memory, so it's using your hard drive storage as memory. This is slow. This is an indication you: Have too little memory and need to run fewer programs or install more memory; and also increase the size of your virtual memory, which will also make your disk space tighter. If you are really pinching the computer that badly, you may want to consider buying a new laptop altogether -- the prices have come down a -lot- just in the 2 1/2 years since you bought that. Anyway, to work around the immediate problem:

Your Gateway came with Windows XP Home Edition. Click Start: Control Panels. See if you can find the Performance control panel, possibly by switching to "Classic view." In there, look for the memory tab. Find the virtual memory section. It may be set to "Let Windows decide." change it to at least 1000mb.

You can get a bigger hard drive (after buying an external case to move stuff over) and upgrade your memory to as much as 1.25gb; but you may find those purchases to not be sensible relative to the price of a new laptop. Memory is cheap and relatively easy; the hard drive is more difficult and will set you back at least $100 if you do it yourself.

I have an IBM thinkpad T20 running windows 2000. The computer is on and booted up but the monitor is not lighting up. It is running on 256mb ram and I was getting a lot of virtual memory is low warnings...

To determine if the laptop has a problem with the inverter of low virtual memory issues, plug an external monitor in to the laptop and you can change the virtual memory by following these instructions, right click on my computer, select properties, then select advanced, click on virtual memory and change the settings to system detemined, save settings and reboot the laptop without the external monitor to see if it is virtual memory or inverter.
Please keep me informed

Virtual memory low

naz2172, Buying memory is always a good idea.
Buy as much as your laptop can handle, to eliminate your problem.
