SOURCE: grinding when mower is engaged but no apparent damagewas found

You may have a bearing gone on one of the quills (blade shafts).

Remove the mower deck from your tractor, and check each quill for play in all directions. If there is any movement other than spinning, you will need to replace.

The clutch on my lawn tractor is moaning really loud when running but stops when the peddle is pressed, however the mower runs and cuts grass just fine. any solutions?

One or more of the pulleys are worn and need to be replaced. The method I use is to pull the belt away and hand-spin each pulley to see which one has a grinding sound or loose feel. (A new pulley will feel rock solid and have no sound when you spin it.)

Hi Josh, It sounds like you have a bearing going out on your deck. The best way to check is to remove your deck from your mower, and remove belt. Then spin one blade at a time, they should spin freely and fairly quietly. You will be able to verify the bad bearing quickly by isolating and checking one at a time. The noisy one that grinding will probably need to be replace, although you could try greasing it first. They are fairly simple to replace and not too expensive. It should consist of three or four bolts. FYI, you may want to take a picture of how your belt is routed before removal, this will help you when reinstalling it. Good luck and I hope this helped.

Treadmill makes loud grinding sound when I run in the middle of the tread. it doesn't make the noise if I run on the left side.

1)you must LUBE the DECK BELT, inmediately, for to avoid the friction
2)LUBE the rollers bearing.too
3) See the main motor for bearing and repair the motor for bearint too.
4) If the problem persist you have worn deck belt, and replace.
God bless you

I have a John Deere LA145 lawn tractor. When I engage the mower, a loud noise (grinding) comes from the mower. What could be the problem? The tractor is 2 yrs old.

check and make sure all of your drive pulleys are spinning freely a bearing may be bad in one of the pulleys cause it grind metal on metal but the most common problem is a bent or warped mowing blade cause it wobble and shake and contact the underside of the deck.

Grinding loud noise in the transaxle

sounds like the bypass lever might not be re-engaging, push it in firmly. OR, the brake is sticking. this, of course, is if the noise is a growl or a groan. if it IS a grinding noise, look for something stuck in the trans cooling fan or between the axles and wheels, otherwise it's inside the trans and that's not good [re: replacement]

Noisey Cub Cadet mower

If the noise is coming from the deck, locate the idle pulley on the deck. there should be 1 or 2 rubber "bumpers" at the opposite end of the pulley arm where it meets the "j" pin. If they are missing, it will make a loud metal to metal sound.
