My camera is set to take a timed picture but I don't know what button to push to start the camera timer just before the picture is taken

You declined to specify the make and model of your camera, so I can't be absolutely certain, but on most cameras you start the self-timer by pressing the shutter release button.
If this doesn't do it, please feel free to reply to this post, but be sure sure to specify the make and model of your camera.

The user guide soes not tell me how to set up the self timer

On the rear of the camera there is a circular set of buttons with Func. Set in the middle. With the camera on picture taking mode press the bottom button in that circle to cycle between single shot, continuous shot, 10 sec. timer, two second timer, and custom timer. HI, i HAVE JUST RECEIVED AN SX130 IS AS A GIFT BUT I CANNOT FIND IN THE MANUAL ANYTHING ABOUT THE SELF TIMER. I CANNOT WORK OUT HOW TO SET IT. CAN YOU GIVE ME DIRECTION PLEASE? THANK YOU V....

Press the Down arrow (from the buttons around the Func./Set button. Either turn the ring or use the up/down arrows to select the clock icon with 10 in it. Press the Func./Set button. Press the shutter button halfway to get the camera to focus on the subject as you normally would. Then press the shutter button fully. The lamp will blink and the timer sound will play. When there are two seconds left before the camera takes the picture, the lamp and timer sound will speed up. The lamp stays lit when the flash goes off.The Canon self-timer basic settings are on page 57 in the pdf of user's guide. Direct link is: http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/5/0300003855/04/PSSX130IS_CUG_EN_03.pdf . Page 63 has the details for using a blink as the trigger for a delayed shot (since I wear glasses I've never tried this type of timer). Page 64 has the directions for a "take picture after a new face enters the frame of the shot".

If the direct link doesn't work, start here: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras/powershot_sx130_is#BrochuresAndManuals .

I hope this helps.

Self timer.

Press the Function button and scroll down to the Drive Mode (3rd icon down on left side of LCD). Use the left or right button to select the self timer delay (2, 10 or custom). Press Function again and you're ready. (Remember to set back to single shot when you're done!)
