Loose spark plug, rings and/or cylinder scratched/scuffed (it doesn't take much) or hole in piston.

How to diagnose a cylinder misfire


First do a compression test on that cylinder to verify there is no internal engine problems and compression on the misfiring cylinders is the sameas the other cylinders. If compression is good verify spark on that cylinder is as good as the spark on the other cylinders if not replace the spark plug and wire, if spark is still weak replace coil. If problem is still no or weak spark then you have a wiring problem on that cylinder. If spark is good use a LED testlight to verify the circuit has good power and ground pulsating on the injector circuit, if not you have a wiring problem if the circuit is working like it should replace the injector. If everything is good up to this point you likely have a leaking intake manifold gasket.

ahhhh a diesel, that , is a horse of a different color.
not GAS but oil burner engine.! there is no spark on diesels...
it uses huge compression rates to combust.
1: glow plugs dead. (or its controls)
2: low compression,
3: bad fuel ,old fuel , water in fuel.
4: weak battery. old or weak for any reasons. cranks too slow.
5: if EFI , other complex reasons. direct injection is it?

which engine? there are many.
can be 50 things
300 means random misfire on all cylinders.
it really means all cylinder have weak HP, weak power, weak combustion energy levels !

The ecu actually measures crankshaft acceleration rates (geekspeak)
in lay terms this means (btw 300s never lie, it's REAL misfire)
there is one exception a loose timing belt or cam chain. can trip 300s.

in no order ever.

1: bad spark to all cyl.
2: low compression to all cylinders (cam timing off, melted CAT)
3: bad fueling to all. (EGR stuck wide open , engine stalls?)

but can be 50 things, so its best not to GUE$$
what we do is conduct simple tests.
first is do the 60,000 mile tuneup. do that its cheap, and works in most cases.
1: tuneup time.sparks and filters both. fuel and air.
2: compression test, and vacuum tests. at WOT,. both. ask for data.
3: check cam timing. if compression fails on all cyl.
4: i scan the ECU looking at fuel trim and closed loop working, ask.

I have and echo bp250 runs but has no power change carb but didn't help is there something iam missing


Hello Margaret,
I would purchase a compression tester from a local parts store and check compression. They simply screw into the spark plug threads, then you pull on the starter rope a few times and observe the reading. You should have at least 60 psi of compression. If compression is good, I would then check spark. Spark testers are fairly cheap and are available at your local parts store too. If you just replaced the carb, Im willing to bet you will find your answer with the two solutions I mentioned. If spark is weak, the coil can be adjusted closer to the flywheel. If compression is weak, your probably looking at a new cylinder/piston and may not be worth fixing. Hope this helps. Good luck and happy wrenching!

325,000 miles,, jeez,,,, need a rebuild on that engine. You walk that far and tell me how you feel, worn out im guessing. new set of rings and bearings and give the poor thing its bang back. give it a compression test to confirm but my moneys on low compression ie old engine

there is a compression release on the cam but make sure you have a strong battery a weak battery will act like like a compression problem

What should a 98 dodge 5.2 compression be. Its in a 1500 Ram if that makes a difference.


GOOD COMPRESSION SHOULD BE 120 - 175 PSI IF COMPRESSION 100 PSI ACCEPTABLE. 90 PSI LOWER CYLINDER WEAK IF COMPRESSION 50 - 20 BLOWN HEAD GASKET.

have you made sure the ignition coil is producing enough voltage to fire under compression load ?

you may get a spark at the plug unloaded but under load it may be breaking down / weak making you think its got a fuel problem ?

does your system use a cdi coil system or point/condenser system ?
spark usually falls into weak spark, no spark catergory

if compression , fuel ( you replaced carb) and exhaust are ok , and you have air and vaccuum tight c/cases only things left are timming and spark

remember F A C T S

F = Fuel A = Air & ( air tight c/cases ) C = Compression T = Timming S = Spark

compression should be about 130- 140 approx if in good running order
