Question about HP ScanJet 3200C Flatbed Scanner

2 Answers

I have a scanjet 3570c flatbed scanner with TMA (the negative scanner). About 3 weeks ago, I had my computer serviced due to virus infections. They wiped the drive and then I reloaded the software for the scanner. The scanner works fine, except I cannot get to it via the HP director. It is this part of the program than enables me to access and use the TMA. I've tried a lot of different things. I've downloaded the 2.0 driver etc. HELP!

I have IE 8. "The message I get with the IE patch link above says "this update does not support any of the HP device drivers you have ......etc"

Been there done that with all these solutions.

I have the HP director on my desk top as a shortcut icon. I can click it to open the icon. When I click "scan" the message I get is "an error occurred in communicationg with the scanning device. Please be sure the device is conne3cted properly". Well, it is connected properly. I can put something on the flatbed and go to the "hp photo and imaging softeare" and click "scan" and get a scan. But I don't have the option via this program to manipulate the outcome in advance. I also cannot load a negative and access the TMA.

I have tried all these solutions. I have IE 8. I have two shortcut icons on my desk top, one for HP director and the other for HP Photo and Imaging Software. I can scan stuff via the HP Photo and Imaging Software but cannot access the program to manipulate the scan in advance. That is part of the HP director program.

When I click on the HP director program, I get 5 icons that open up. They are for "scan picture" "scan document", "make copies", "view and print", and help. When I click on any one of them I get the following "an error occurred in communicating with the scanning device. Make sure the device is connected properly" Well, it is because I can scan via the HP photo and imaging software program.

I have been able to access the file where Winautosdk[1] is located via the HP program. It is not available to me via the "windows explorer" program. the winautosdk[1] is located at:

    c:/documents and settings/carol ritter/local settings/temporary internet files/content.IE5/PNOTXNDR/winautosdk[1]

I have found that under the temporary internet files/content.IE5 there are 13 other folders besides the PNOTXNDR. These all have A LOT of pictures, some from facebook, some from ads etc. I have no clue if these are important to keep. However, when I click into the winautosdk[1] (and there's not a "dot" function in that string) there doesn't appear to be any files in that one. I appreciate your advice.

  • carolritter2 Aug 25, 2010

I still am unable to open HP Director thus cannot enable the TMA on my scanner. All disgnostic tests for the scanner indicate it is connected properly and working properly. It is the software of HP Director that is not function properly. I've downloaded WIAAUT.dll and added that to my system32. I've rebooted, uninstalled and reinstalled and downloaded latest updates. The thing just lays there like a dead frog. Please help.

  • carolritter2 Aug 26, 2010

Well thanks. I have done the uninstall/reinstall 3-4 times. I do have IE8, so I'll try that tack next. Will let you know if/when it works.

Here is the support site for Hp scan-jet ..I located you model ..all you have to do is to select the exact operation system you use..and download all related (driver first ) and install into computer ..after that it has to work ..see that for software there are some fixes they added..

My advice is to remove all programs and drivers related..download the new one from the site ...and also when you remove the previous installation go to program files and remove any remaining folders related with the printer and printer software for to get rid of any settings it may keep ..
after that remove internet explorer 8 ..and roll back to 7 or 6 better ..cause explorer 8 bar is in conflict with hp commends..
after that install the driver software ..and if it is needed the updates and fixes from the site ..It has to work ..but get rid of the explorer 8 cause it still has issues and I had problems related with printers and scanners with it before..

  • carolritter2 Aug 27, 2010

I do not know what worked. I did not remove the explorer 8 and I did not remove and reinstall the software. I did download via HP the WIAAUT.dll file that the previous helper told me to do, I finally got it in the right place, (system32) but it was still not working. I went to the HP web site and got about 3 pages of troubleshooting with the specific error message I was getting. I plugged the thing into another USB port, and then I had TWO scanner options on the drop down list, but still the HP Director didn't work. Unplugged the whole thing in preparation to kicking it down the street! Today, a friend came over to help and Lo and Behold!, it worked. (The HP director doesn't work still - but the scanner software now gives me the option of accessing the TMA, which is what I was after).

probably you ended up with 2 different installations of the software ..this being the explaining of the 2 executable present ... the idea to remove all installations and reinstall them would have been better ..but if it worked its ok ...
Th replacing of the file in system 32 is not the thing that worked...the working thing is the fact that you reinstalled the downloaded program from the HP ..and you ended up with a functional driver ..

the removing of the IE8 was just cause the printer /scanner tool bar in the IE8 do not function due to an incompatibility issue ..I have it too with my hp printer..and I use Mozilla Firefox for browsing ..

  • carolritter2 Aug 28, 2010

I was prepared to remove the IE8 and revert to the IE 7 or 6. I checked on line and made a call to one of the numbers, got someone in India. He suggested I do some diagnostic checking in the "system" folder. After following his instructions, he said "Oh miss, you have a number of viruses...I hope you don't have any banking information on your computer (I don't). He said how did I want to pay for the fix?" Well, What started the problem was getting my HD wiped for viruses originally! I told him I'd go back to Data Doctor and tell them about the additional viruses. They told me that I should never have installed a .dll file in the sys32. Said I'd probably corrupted the file. That was a low point. Anyway, when my friend came over, we talked about the steps I'd taken, then I turned on the computer and accessed the scanner and....it worked! The HP Director is still a dead toad, but the TMA can be accessed via the HP photo and imaging software. So I'm going with that.

I t sounds like a temporary fix...and cause it work I will say to leave it be for the moment ..The issue may be indeed a number of viruses that corrupted the functionality of the system files...and to get rid and make it fully functional you will have to reinstall the operation system from scratch ...To so that either use the recovery partition ..if you have one ..or the recovery disk ...or ..my option will be a boot-able disk with the installer of the operation system ...this way you will make a clean install and format the C partition during it ...and after that all you need are the drivers for devices,,(available on motherboard's disk ..or on the support site of the manufacturer..) ..remember to install an antivirus when you will do it ...and the programs for the rest of the functions get them from a trusty location to be sure you have no issues..when you decide to do it ..I am able to help and guide you in how to ...or just ask someone to do it ...for you cause it is just a 2 hours job ...and you end up with a clean newly installed pc ..that will work like a charm ..

OK I will list these links anyway but I susopect you may have already been there (but ya never know)

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=ca&docname=c00802504

OR

Try start the DIRECTOR

Wait a few seconds, Now hold down the ALT key and press space bar.

A small box will appear.

Click on Minimize

The HP Director task should appear in the task bar at the bottom of the screen

Click it, and the program will appear and should work normally.

OR download the internet explorer patch here
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericSoftwareDownloadIndex?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=uk&softwareitem=oj-46104-1
and then follow on below.

Goto to Control Panel
Then Add or Remove Programs and
Remove IE7 if it is listed (should leave you with IE 8.0).
Uninstall the HP software ( put in the CD and select "Uninstall").
Re-install the HP software,
Shut down and re-start the computer after which you should be able to use Director.
At this point re-install IE 7.0 (not always possible)
Run the CIT207355-HPCOM-PATCH-v8.exe patch, then see if you can use Director again.

Have you tried investigating the driver type (not quite same as the driver) and swap from TWAIN to any alternative as I have had scanner issues where swapping to the TWAIN one fixed quite a few things.

Also if you hac=ve MS OFFICE installed you could try through that too as it quite often allows pre manipulation to be engaged by starting such as director a little later in the process and might help you get around some issues.

  • carolritter2 Aug 23, 2010

ok, when the thing was working before the hard drive wipe, I had TWO alternatives for it, onw was a WIA HP 3570C. When I downloaded all the patches, there was one for TWAIN. I don't know where to look for driver type. Can you help? How do I swap the driver type. That might be the solution.

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/...

The section about run time requirements should give you a good starting point for WIA.

Before you get that far you may want to also do a full windows update and do it CUSTOM to select any listed but not install items that yo may need as WIA which is linked to twain may already be in one of the SP updates.

  • carolritter2 Aug 24, 2010

I did a MS download of critical and software updates. Right after I did that, there were some more and I did it again. I also downloaded the WIAAUT.dll file. Now I have to put it in the right place, and I cant seem to locate it on my computer as it is a "hidden" file. It should go in System32 directory. Then have to run a command prompt regsvr32 wiaaut.dll

The thing still isn't working. I don't know how to get the wiaaut.dll file to the right place.

    Project NOMAD Aug 24, 2010

Try dropping a copy just in teh system folder and go again with the reg

  • carolritter2 Aug 24, 2010

the problem is that there are 4 files that download. Only the wiaaut.dll file goes into tye system32 directory. Once I have these files downloaded and unzipped, then a search of my computer cannot find them, even looking in hidden files. I've looked in my virus log too, and they are not there. I've downloaded 3 times. They are included in the temporary internet files folder but the search engine cannot access them. It doesn't seem like the previous access to this application was this difficult. I appreciate the advice you offer.

You are looking in the temp directories and thats not where they wer supposed to be.

I would get them again but instead of using run or anything do a "save" and make sure yo direct the save to a common folder that you can get to easily.

I usually make a folder called download on my C drive and anything like this I send there.

easy to find and not hidden in system or temp directories.

  • carolritter2 Aug 24, 2010

I finally got smart and when I downloaded, I did a "copy to" and did as the instructions said. Copied the wiaaut.dll to system32 directory, and ran the regsvr32 wiaaut.dll. Everything worked except the HP director. I turned the computer off, replugged everything, still no dice. Any advice you can offer is sure appreciated.

  • carolritter2 Aug 24, 2010

here's a thought. I initially removed the program that was established by the disc that came with the unit, (driver 1.0) and downloaded the driver 2.0 from the internet. I guess I'll go back, remove and add the disc program and see if anything is different.

  • carolritter2 Aug 25, 2010

I reinstalled the version 1.0, then downloaded the 2.0 driver and various patches. The scanner works but the HP director is dead in the water. Can you help or should I contact someone at HP? Please let me know. Thanks.

I am sorry that you did not find it particularly helpful even though the information provided was of a high quality.

Some of these type of issues require a "hands on" approach but FixYa does not allow that and such approaches could get an expert banned from FixYa

Its clear from our conversation that WIA and TWAIN are related to your issue and without being there this is a problem that could not be fixed from a simple interchange of information

  • Project NOMAD
    Project NOMAD Aug 26, 2010

    Yes please

Normally when this issue crops up here I run through the things we have and the problem is fixed.

It would be nice to know if I am going to face an extra bug and even experts sometimes learn from the askers so that would be great.

So glad you got at least what ou needed working.

Have had issues myself with fancy routers that I was ready to launch and sometimes just after a restart the darn thing seems to know its should work or sufer the consequences.

So what did your friend actually do as I am interested still ?

  • carolritter2 Aug 28, 2010

He did nothing! We sat and talked, I turned the thing on to demo for him what the problems were, and IT WORKED! It had not worked before, I promise. I'm just wondering if a period of "quiet" helped for all the linkages to be worked out? Doesn't make sense, but who knows.

  • Project NOMAD
    Project NOMAD Aug 28, 2010

from my experience you are probably closer to the truth than you realise.

Vista and windows 7 include background compatibility routines that can identify simple issues and for the most part will quietly attempt to fix things.

Most obvious of these is the way they re-arrange the startup programs.

Take note of your toolbar if you install a lot of software and you will notice they dont always load up in the same order as windows works out the best load times.

Nice that you got it sorted and thnak you for getting back as it was starting to bug me a little that I was missing somthing simple

I have connected the TMA to my hp scanjet and I have put a slide in it, but when I scan it, all I get is a scan of the whole glass and the slide is black.

When scanning slides and negatives the scanner lid lights up so light passes through the slides and negatives and the image is picked up by the sensor.
If the image of the whole glass is black then most likely the lamp in the lid is faulty.

Where do i put the negative to scan on hp g3010 scanner

On the lid there are thin plastic rails that frame two 35mm Negatives. Place the film in that holder, framing what you wish.

Check HP's site for the owners manual for advanced settings for your specific model to get the best results from your Negative or as HP calls it Transparent Materials Adapter (TMA)

HP Scanner 3570C-can not scan my slides

According to the manual, you should always scan from the HP scanning software to scan slides using Scanjet transparent material adapter. There is no button that you can set for default slide scanning properties. This is shown on page 8 of the manual for the 3500 series scanners. The manual is available here: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/72847/Hp-Scanjet-2300c-Series.html?page=13#manual .

Since the scanner works with pictures, make sure that the TMA adapter is plugged into the back of the scanner. Next open the software, HP Photo & Imaging Director. In most versions of Windows, press Start and look for the HP programs heading. Expand this to find the executable file. Alternatively, find the icon on the desktop or find the software in the file explorer (Program Files/HP/ on 32-bit versions, Program Files (x86)/HP) and then the appropriate sub-folder. Now try to scan the slides when they are loading in the adapter.

I hope this helps. Please add a comment with your OS if you are still having problems. Some newer OS versions may have installed generic drivers for the ScanJet 3570C. The generic driver might not communicate with the TMA properly.)
