Question about Toshiba 42HL167 42 in. LCD Television

Our Toshiba HDTV

Hello,
We purchased a 42" Toshiba 1080P LCD HDTV (42HL167) TV at Best Buy on 3/6/08. We have read the entire manual and are still unhappy with our purchase.

The problems we have are with the picture quality. Most of the channels are blurry and do not come in clear. We have contacted Comcast and they tell us we have the highest quality they offer. We have a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 HD DVR box that they tell us will offer the HD channels in the best quality using a HDMI cable. With this we watch on the HD channels and they are still not clear. What do we need to do or know to get a good picture?

The other issue is that a large part of the picture is outside the frame of the TV. It stinks to watch a game of basketball or other sport and never know the score because it is below the picture shown! Or try to watch a movie or show and only get to see from the nose down on the characters if they are toward the top of the screen!! There is a button to change the picture size however the only options make the picture bigger not smaller. In the manual it talks about the TV showing the picture based upon the signal coming in to the TV, however we have no idea what signal would be coming in. There is also an area to select auto aspect ratio however it does not change anything, whether it is on or off. This is very very very annoying! How can we fix this?

    Hi,

Thanks for getting back to us. We will investigate using the line filter or antenna to see if this helps us. We watch all that we can in the HD channels, the picture just does not seem crisp and clear. I expect it to look as good as when we are watching a DVD (DVD pictures are clear and within the confines of the screen, we have no complaints when watching DVDs). Am I just expecting to much?

    .

We have turned off the auto aspect and it does not seem to make a difference. Certain shows are worse than others, news broadcasts and sports or shows that have words or credits at the bottom of the screen are always cut off.

The DVR we have will show us on the screen when we are viewing HDTV and 1080i when available.

    What else can we do?

    Thanks so much!

For the video theater settings, for any display mode I put, the picture is cut off on the left and right sides.

My Toshiba does the same thing. It didn't always do it though...just recently. I have tried all the stuff mentioned to no avail. If I watch a dvd, the pic size choices are different, but I do see all of what I am supposed to see.

    Greetings MDMSG,

This certainly is an odd situation you have described! As far as the clarity, if the cable company is broadcasting in High Definition and you are connected through an HDMI cable, then you should have a clear picture. The only thing that might help to clear up your picture would be a line filter, otherwise known as a power center. This will help clean up the power coming into your television which at times can cause interference.

Your television is also capable of receiving over the air High Definition signals with an HD antenna. I would be curious to see if you were to get a better or different picture using that option.

As far as the aspect ratio, I would suggest trying to turn off the auto aspect ratio and see if this helps. You can find further instructions on how to do this on page 52 of your manual or by following this link http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/tacpassets-i...

Finally, what happens when you try to watch a dvd? Does the tv still exhibit poor quality and bad aspect ratio?

    Thank you,

    Dorothy

The cable box should also have a way to make the picture larger or smaller, this sounds like it is set to a zoom in setting on the cable box not the tv.  You will have to look at your comcast manual or if you don't have one go online to the cable box manufacturer and see what keys you have to push to get the screen to go back to FULL.

Greetings MDMSG,

I really do not have any further advice other than to possibly contact Toshiba and see if they have any information on this problem.

I wish I could be of more help!

I need to replace my seine board on my toshiba 42hl167 tv and need to know how to do it

What is the sein Board? I'm guessing you mean the signal board since you are also talking about updating the firmware. Signal boards are not too hard to replace on an lcd TV depending on your abilities. You can do a search for a service manual on the internet it will give you detail instructions on how to replace the board.

Tv will not turn on

Possibly not.. in this case with the 42HL167, the CPU pcb (most commonly referred to the SEINE PCB) is having issues booting and just isn't starting up.

My friend gave me his 42HL167 after this problem started after a power event during a storm and I managed to fix it by reloading the firmware.

I posted instructions on my website at:

http://www.benjammin.net/www/pages/techtips/Toshiba-Regza-42HL167.html

Once I figured out some of the facts, it was a breeze...

I posted this elsewhere here since there's so many duplicate threads... trying the firmware update is simple, so it's worth trying that first since the case doesn't need to be opened.

Lcd toshioba tv 42'' damaged screen could it be repaired

If you mean cracked or smashed when you say "damaged", the answer is yes, but it would be far less expensive to buy a new set!
We are an authorized service center for Toshiba. The replacement LCD panels are typically more expensive than the entire set was new! Go figure...

REGZA 42HL167 Won't turn on

I found it!

I managed to fix it by reloading the firmware.

I posted detailed instructions on my website at:

I hope this is still useful for others. It's so embarrassingly easy anyone can at least TRY it before calling a tech if they have any friends that are computer savvy.

How do i take the stand off of my toshiba tv model 42hl167?

Ok, this is what I did. I had to remove the four screws in the back of the tv. You can look in your manual for what screws or look up toshiba.com ... customer support, and enter your model number and from there you should be able to find the manual.

How much will it cost to repair a Toshiba 42HL167?

Yes you should always buy the warranty on big ticket items like, your television. One repair can easily cost you more than the cost of the warranty. Hope this answers your question.
