If your CD drive is not working, and you are attempting to use it for the recovery disk, that will likely fail as well. It does not mean that the disk is bad. Verify that the disk is still good by taking it to another drive, right-click and "Explore". If you can see the files there, it should still work just fine. But I don't think it will help you to solve this problem.

There are many posted problems exactly like this on the MS site. You haven't stated your OS, but this link takes you to guided help on resolving it. It does involve modifying your registry (always a risky business in my mind), but I have looked for quite some time, and this is the solution I have seen numerous times - and unfortunately, the only one. MS should address this, as it appears to be rampant, but... Anyway, the link is http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/.

There are only 2 other suggestions that may help. First, I saw one instance where the issue was resolved by a user removing Roxio 7.5, as that version is not Vista-compatible, and it solved their problem. The other is to take a look at the error code listing MS published at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123 and you will see that they indicate you should uninstall the driver, and then follow the procedure to let Windows find and install new hardware.

So, if I were facing an identical problem, I would make sure any CD/DVD software on my system was definitely compatible with the OS (including any and all updates as necessary). Then, I would attempt to uninstall the drivers and see if Windows reinstalls on its own. If not, then I would be down to following the instructions regarding modifying the filter settings in the registry, as there wasn't one case that I saw where this did not work.

Thank you for posting back to let me know how it stands after you look at this, and let me know if you need more help, or if it is solved, thank you for rating FixYa!

Check the DVD Drive cable connections, make sure they are plugged-in properly. Check BIOS if DVD is detected; you may have to reset to default configuration. If it's detected in BIOS, press F12 while on the Dell screen to access advance boot menu & select CD/DVD drive option. Insert a bootable disc like windows installer & see if your drive will read it. For cabling setup refer to this link http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/op210l/en/ug/mtdrvs02.htm#wp1136008

Dvd writer does not write or read any dvd on hp pavillion a1230n windows xp operating system

Try booting from the disc drive with a windows CD. If it does work, then try uninstalling from devices in windows, then scan for hardware changes and re-install. If its still not working I suggest doing a backup of your files and re-install windows, a corrupted registry may also cause this. If trying to boot from CD does not work you will need to replace the DVD drive

On the back of a CD-writer or a DVD-writer is a small grid (2 rows) of gold pins.

Each vertical set of pins is labelled: MA(ster), SL(ave), and C(able)S(elect).
Be sure that one drive has a small jumper between the MA pins,
and the other drive has a small jumper between the SL pins.

Was there any software on CD-ROM that came with the DVD-writer,
e.g., software to play DVDs, and software to write CDs and DVDs?
To "play" a DVD, you'll need that software.
To "play" a music CD, Windows Media Player will suffice.

I don't seem to have my cd drive anywhere. It won't play cds anymore....

First see if your CDRom is loaded by the PC by Right clicking on My Computor.Left click on properties at the bottom of the dropdown.A window wil be opened for you-click on Hardware at the top ,double click on Device Manager. When Device Manager opens, check down the list for DVD/CDRom drives-click on the + button to the left of it.You will then see your drives description below DVD/CDRom.Double click on it-a window will be opened telling you whether your drive is working properly or what the problem is.Usually it will be a matter of reloading the driver software or reinstalling the drive. Some times it is advisable to uninstall the first one before you reinstall and remember to restart your PC after the installation. If you dont find your DVD or CDRom in device manager it has 'nt been installed or the driver software corrupted.Happy landing.Georgeo.
