I just installed a Honeywell 5.2 Day RTH2310B Programmable thermostat and I had to deal with the same situation: 2 wires, one white one black. After reading the edvice in one of the blog, the solution that worked for me was: BLACK ON Rc terminal and WHITE on W terminal. My furnace is running fine now. Hope it helps.

Make sure on the furnace that you have the same colored wires connected at the thermostat to R and W. Check for good connections at both locations. You can always test to make sure the unit fires by crossing the two wires together. If the unit fires, you have a bad thermostat.

if the thermostat is wired correctly, your problem is likely in your furnace.

My first guess would be a faulty limit switch, but without seeing your furnace, it would be hard to say.

Have a qualified service person look it over... It would likely be a good time to have it cleaned and tuned also (once per year is best, or every other year reduces your chances having problems)

If you have a spare wire (unused) in the thermostat wire sheath you can eliminate the batteries as the power source.
Turn off the power to the furnace.
Open the thermostat and look for terminal "C". If it is not being used, then
look inside the furnace for the thermostat wire terminals. Black or blue are probably not being used. Take one of these wires and strip insulation back 1/2 inch. Connect this wire to the COMMON (C)(-)wires from the low voltage transformer.
Open the thermostat and connect the same wire to the "C" terminal on the thermostat.

Whats' so hard is the Honeywell thermostat has a built in 1@ differential. It is not adjustable.
You might ask your installer about a time delay relay installed in the furnace to break the thermostat heat wire (usually white wire).
Most time delay relays are 90 seconds. But that might be enough to reduce the furnace cycling.

Changing out old thermostat

your old thermostat is a milivolt and the wire runs from the heater to the thermostat. You have to open the back of the new one and connect the wire as per the instructions on the wireing diagram that came with the new one. I just installed a similar one myself, you will be very happy with it.
