Mac can't find the system to start up as usual, if you have the dvd that came with it (or any retail mac os dvd) start up from that and run the disc utility which will hopefully repair your disc.
If you have not the dvd , then do this start up the mac holding down apple and s keys , you will get a black screen and white text. You are now in the system firmware and you have to careful here!
wait a mo press return once, then type
fsck -f
press return once, this will force the firmware to check the disc.

if this goes ok then try restarting normally.

hope you helps

We have the dvd, but it went read the disk and didn't see hard drive, only saw the backup drive and the dvd. Then tried starting up holding the apple and s key, but still just a white screen. Hubby is going to take it into our store for the apple here in Burlington, vt. Thanks for trying, Mary

Sound like you have an issue with either your hard drive or the operating system has lost the plot. Try this OS About OS Recovery

If you are able to access the recovery partition then use the disk utility to check the disk.

If this does not work then take the computer to an Apple repair centre, if it's still covered by warranty the disk might be replaced under warranty.

If it's not covered, you could try using DiskWarrior 4 The Disk Utility for Mac Disk Repair Mac Directory Repair... which has allowed me to recover disks that have not been able to be repaired with Apple's disk utility.

My mac will turn on but after about 45 seconds or so, it will show a folder icon with a question mark on it. What does this mean???

Hey there, I always have the same thing. For some reason it always just comes like that. The last time I consulted with Apple, they said that it doesn't affect anything
So all is fine, don't worry!

Grey screen with a blinking folder and question mark

Ok get ready for this, you have a PRAM battery on the motherboard, since your system is old the battery is dead. It is the same as a CMOS battery for a PC. It hold crucial startup info. Open the case replace the battery (can be bought at any radio shack) Press the reset on the mob and start from cd and set date and time then restart.

When you turn the comuter on, it just shows the

--SAFE BOOT MODE--

I am going to have you take your Mac into Safe Mode to see if we can't remove a possible folder(s) that may be affecting your Mac's start up function.

Try these steps:

• Reboot your Mac
• Upon restarting your Mac, press the Shift key.
• Hold the Shift key until you see a White Screen with Gray Apple icon and eventually a spinning gear.

• When you see the Spinning gear, release the Shift key.

• Allow the Mac to continue booting up. Also this may take a little while
(NOTE: this may take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes to load to the Safe mode screen depending on the performance of your Mac, but if it exceeds this time, shutdown your Mac and try just once more. It may have just frozen up the first time around for you.)

• You are going to enter the Safe Mode (which looks like your main desktop environment - the only difference is certain start up items are disabled.)

• Once within the Desktop in Safe Mode
• From the Finder Menu, click Go> Go to Folder
• Type in this line: /System/Library/StartupItems
• This path, is going to take you to the System Library folder which has all of your Mac OS X StartupItems.

• Remove all of those folders to the Trash.

*Reboot your Mac normally and see if you can access your normal User desktop environment.

This should help get your iMac G4 back up
and running.

Mac book only shows apple logo when turned on

This could be an issue where you may have a few Startup items in your StartupItems folder in your System Library which may be affecting your Macbook's startup.

So I recommend you boot your Mac into Safe Mode to see if you can't remove a possible folder(s) that may be affecting your Mac's start up function.

Try these steps:

-SAFE BOOT MODE-
• Reboot your Mac
• Upon restarting your Mac, press the Shift key.

• Hold the Shift key until you see a White Screen with Gray Apple icon and eventually a spinning gear.
• When you see the Spinning gear, release the Shift key.

• Allow the Mac to continue booting up. Also this may take a little while.
(NOTE: this may take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes to load to the Safe mode screen depending on the performance of your Mac, but if it exceeds this time, shutdown your Mac and try just once more. It may have just frozen up the first time around for you.)

• You are going to enter the Safe Mode (which looks like your main desktop environment the only difference is certain start up items are disabled.)

My macbook has a blank white screen, and then it showed a flashing file folder with a question mark on it.

Your macbook is not locating your hardrive.
turn off your laptop, insert the Mac OS disc in the drive, and then reboot while holding down the c key to allow it to boot from the OS on the DVD.
Then use the disk utilities application from the desktop menu and to a disk repair on your hard drive and then restart.

This is a copy of a previous post of mine -

Here are a few things that might help you
Try to start your computerfrom the system CD, if this fails, you may try to start it from theDisk Warrior CD, if this won't work also, I would check the PRAM.

It may be just a desktop folder which you would use to continue an installation, you should delete and start again.
