I had this same problem last year and went through all the checklist in poshpoms suggestions ( I am on mains Gas ). The issue was caused by the Flame rods. Near the 2 pilots at the front and the back. Those small rods each that 'senses' the flame become inadequate, so they were replaced with a new pilot assembly from Rinnai that had longer rods and better coverage. Issue was fixed. Good Luck.

Firstly here is a link to the manual.

The error code 12 has a few causes. If you are on LPG sometimes the gas regulator on supply line just after the bottles is the cause. Usually this is intermittent. If thewre are any blockages in the flue or chimmney it might give a 12, the flame would go very yellow just before it tripped and might smell a bit odd. I would start with the regulator, if you have something else on gas like a cooktop, light that up first, then try the fire. See what happens to the flame on the cooktop. If it dwindles too you definately have a gas supply fault. Don't be afraid to post the fault again if this doesn't help, I check for Rinnai problems avery couple of days.

Cheers

OUr Rinnai gas heater convector 516tr keeps on turning itself off and flashes 12 on the light panel. What does that mean and how to fix it? tks

Hi.

12 flashes means "Incomplete combustion". The code is prompted when the flame turns off because of a problem.

Check filter, check gas pressure and thermocoupling. Those are the problem that commonly trigger the code 12 error.

Here a manual.

Here Fixya thread on the problem.

My rinnai gas log fire cuts out after 8-10 seconds when turned on,& the number 12 flashes on the displey

Fault code 12 means the flame lit ok but hen for some reason went out. In my experience this usually means a fault on the gas supply itself. If you are on lpg I have had many problems with gas regulators recently. If you have something else on gas like a cooktop, fire that up first, then try the log fire. If this seems to fix the fault get a gas fitter to change the regulator.

Make sure all taps and isolattion valves are fully on.

I'm have assumed this is not a new installation so the unit has worked ok before.

Does the flame stay strong after it lights. If it slowly fades then definately a gas supply problem.
If it stays strong but just shuts of with a click, then possibly a fault on the heater, check the rod the flame heats is well in the flame. Could be the electronic otherwise but very rare.
If the flame goes yellow like a candle and then shuts off you will need to check the flue or chimmney as this might be blocked..

Cheers, let me know if anything works and re-post with any more info if you are still stuck, I will keep a look out for you.

Does not want to start

Intermittent faults on these units are very very rare; they either work or they dont! Ive had similar reports that ended up being more of a gas regulator fault (thats the hunk of metal that the small copper tubes from the cylinders are connected to). Do you have any other applainces on gas. When the heater doesnt work try the others'; if they work keep thenm going and then go back and try the heater. Does the heater try and ignite? I also like to recomend getting these heaters serviced occasionally. Just like cars, intermittent faults can be a reminder to get a good service done.

Rinnai heater flashes code 12

Bailey,

Next time you try your stove watch the flame. If the flame goes away and then the error code comes on, you have something wrong with the over temp circuit, gas or gas valve, If the code comes on and then the flame goes away you have a flame sensor problem.

Good luck,

Rinnai Heater - error message "12"

An error code of 12 on your heater means a flame failure has occured. It could be the following: Flame Rod dirty, Obstruction in burner, improper gas pressure, or a bad ignitor board. I am suggesting you get a technician who is familiar with Rinnai products to check out the above items.
