The external storage device has several major components:
* USB cable
* external power-supply
* disk-drive inside the enclosure
* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.
Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.
Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.
Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.
Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.
Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.
Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

My Seagate Momentus 5400.3 80GB is not getting detected and message pop up as USB not recogonized. Kindly do the needful

The disk-drive inside the enclosure is problematic.
Open the enclosure, to get the model-number and serial-number from the label on the disk-drive.
Then, access Seagate's web-site, to check the warranty-status of the drive. If the warranty still is valid, they will replace it, at minimal cost to you.
If the warranty has expired, purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and transplant it into the enclosure, to "resuscitate" your device.

My western digital hard drive stopped working

Get the serial-number from the label on the device.
Access W.D.'s web-site to "check warranty status".
If the warranty is valid, W.D. will replace it, at minimal cost to you.
If the warranty has expired, then W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- buy a new MyBook from their web-site, and cite the serial-number of your drive, and you'll get a discount on your purchase.

Cannot access / view hard drive from my PC.

Try connecting it to a different USB port on your computer.
Try connecting it to a USB port on a different computer.
If the problem continues, then one of the two major components inside the enclosure:
* disk-drive
* USB-to-disk-drive adapter
have failed.
Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if the disk-drive, by itself, still is accessible. If not, then you could buy a new disk-drive, and "transplant" it into the enclosure, to "resurrect" your external enclosure.

Is the disk-drive still under warranty? If so, contact Seagate, and exercise the warranty, to get a replacement.

Computer does not find ext drive it always has in the past I tried it on other PC and still no Help

There are two possibilities: the drive is bad or the enclosure has lost a connection. First try a new data cable (if you didn't do this when you tried it on the other computer).
Next, if you are willing to do this, take apart the enclosure and check for any loose or damaged wires in the enclosure. To check if the drive is good, check the specs on the drive (IDE/SATA), you can use a different enclosure (match the size and internal connection) or a USB/IDE/SATA adapter. With the drive connected to the computer with a different device, see if you can access the drive.

For most external drives, taking apart the enclosure to access the drive may void the warranty. However, a warranty replacement will not include data recovery.

Good luck.

Doesnt register and all the lights stay

Does it work after you change the USB cable?
If so, then your USB cable is the problem.

Does it work on some "other" computer?
If so, then your computer is the problem.

Does it work it _any_ USB port in your computer?

Failing that, disassemble the casing, to find:
* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter,
* the disk-drive itself.

Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" drive to a desktop computer, to see if the disk-drive can be detected.
If not, then the disk-drive has "died".
Buy a new disk-drive, and connect it to that USB-to-disk-drive adapter, to "revive" your external unit.

Read the serial-number from the disk-drive, and access Western Digital's web-site, and enter the number in the "check warranty" section, to see if your unit is still under warranty, i.e., a free replacement.

If not under warranty, then W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty Program" -- buy a new External Hard-Drive from their web-site, and they will give you about a 20% discount from their "retail" price.

Drive is detected by computer but when tried to access it, computer freezes up and cannot access external hard drive

First attempt to format it. If that doesn't works, restart your computer and acces the BIOS SETUP menu, and check if the drive is well read by the BIOS. If that doesn't work, then you may have to call the warranty.

Hard drive with loose usb connection

Hi there. This would be an actctual manufacturing fault. I would strongly suggest that you copy/backup all the files you want to keep, from that hard drive, to another one. Then, if it's still under Warranty from either the shop where you bought it, or still under warranty from Seagate themselves, you can send it back to be fixed, or get a replacement. If it's not under warranty, then you could always take the external case off the hard drive and see if it's something you could repair yourself. Either way, as I said, I would still strongly suggest you copy/backup any files that you want to keep.
