If it hasn'tbeen used it probably has an old set of data for the gps satellites. You may need to do a reset on it. This is in your user manual near the end for this model. I don't have that here but it will involve either pushing a reset button while turning the power on or holding down the screen and the power button or just going ino the menu and selecting reset.

Regardless of which way it does the reset this blows out the old data and then downloads the new one from the satteites. When you do this you want to have the unit charged and running on the charger. You also want to do this with a clear view of the sky to soeed it up. On the 200;s it can take as little as 5 minutes to as much as 45 depending on how many satelittles it sees and so on. Anyway you set it up , plug it in, reset it, and leave it alone utill it downloads an starts up and thats the entire process. After this is down it will now be able to synchronize the time and have a valid data map of the satelitles it should expect to see. When you use the unit more often it updates these as it boots up but if you don;t use it and this info gets outdated it won't be ale to see anything or know where it is.

I swtched garmin sat nav off on the power say off by accident so now please how do i switch my sat nav on?

Simply switch it back on using the same switch. If this does not work press the reset button, see your device handbook for its location. I turn on my satnav to set the routing and after it has finished calculating the route i tend to turn it off again. When i come to unfamilliar area I turn iit back on and it picks up the satalites faster and carries on from that point. You should be able to turn on and off at will anyway.

Garmin not getting satalite reception

I would try an external antenna and a firmware update. I believe there is a GPS Chipset update for that unit. Just get the free program WebUpdater from Garmins site and run it with your unit plugged into your computer. Take the unit outside and give it max 20 minutes to figure out it s location. If that does not help then it is time for a new GPS or get that one repaired.

296 takes forever to acquire satalites.

If you don't use it very often it can take time to find its location. Have you tried using the 'set initial location' option? Once it knows roughly where it is and what time it is it can then work out which satellites it should be looking for instead of searching for any/all of them. The manual does say that it will take time if it has no initial clue as to where on the planet it is, and if you're on the move while it's trying to work that out then it may take even longer. Obviously, if it has a poor view of the sky, or if most of the satellites are behind you and you have a tin roofed aircraft then that will probably not help either.
