The device has suffered a major failure. If you're lucky it's in the electronics of the case so take it apart, extract the hard disk inside, put it in another external case (or directly inside a desktop) and access it this way. If even then the disk isn't recognized then the hard disk itself has died and all the data on it is lost.

How can I install the driver for My Passport WD External HDD 500GB online?

It is a "plug-and-play" device, and Windows XP/Vista/7 are "plug-and-play-aware" systems.
So, just connect it, and Windows should recognize it.

Are you getting any error-messages?

Device is not recognized

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked. I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

Xp not recognizing my 250gb WD passport

The Western Digital My Passport line, besides the Essential Series, is originally formated for a Mac (in the HFS+ format) and as such cannot be read by Windows PCs. You can either get a program to read the External such as Macdrive, or format it to NTFS or FAT32; formats that are readable by Windows. I would recommend formatting it to NTFS, because you can only transfer up to 4 Gigabyte files to FAT32, while NTFS is nearly limitless.

I am confused as a HDD is NOT a USB device.

All brand new drives need to be formatted, then Windows loaded.

Hello i have a problem with my external hard drive (320GB western digital), when i'm connect to my PC..the windows does not recognized it and said malfunction device. How can i solve it? Need help nooriz

Unplug all USB devices that may be connected. Then do the following.

You can attempt a repair of the USB system by opening The Device Manager and
removing all of the USB devices. Then reboot the computer, that should cause
Windows to reload the USB drivers from the dll cache

Mac not recognizing External Western Digital HD.

the problem is that your western digital operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple macs is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac.

an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/NTFS-3G.shtml

download and install the software then restart your mac.

My old computer does not recognize my new 250gb wd passport I get an error that my Z drive is not logged on

Are you sure your 'old' computer has USB 2.0 support and not only USB 1.1?
You can try accessing the BIOS of the computer and see if you can change the USB version there.

Once it is recognized, Windows (XP?) should recognize it and install the drivers. If you are running an older OS, you probably need to install drivers for it first. But those would come with the drive (on a CD maybe).

Your usb device could be finished or your USB ports may not be strong enough/ enough power to run the device.
