1998 Mitsubishi vs-60601 picture is dull and not as vibrant as it should be

I have a 1998 Mitsubishi vs-60601. The picture has in the past been very good considering the technology. The picture has been becoming increasingly less vibrant, however all of the functions work properly. Is there a possible componant that could be replaced, to bring the picture back to life? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom.

The first thing I would do is to clean the lenses of the CRTs they may be coated with dust that will dim the picture. other than that the CRTs may be failing since the phospher of CRTs fade in brightness over time and the only solution is to replace all three CRTs. the CRTs I have discovered are no longer availible.

The two things you can do is 1. polish the mirror and CRT lenses as they get dull over time. Do not use windex on the mirror just a soft damp cloth then dry. 2. Change the coolant in the CRTs as this can get cloudy over time causeing the CRTs to loose their sharpness and brilliance.

Its more likely that the front and rear mirrors need to be cleaned. The mirrors tend t get dull and that will cause the picture to become dull and the colors wont appear as vibrant as normal.

The tv turns on but there is no picture. just an audio thump thump. like a drum. any ideas

Look inside front panel. Look under right side picture tube for oil leakage on signal board. If you see a puddle and possibly corrosion, then the tv is toast.

Mitsubishi VS-60601 has a distorted picture with double vision even if it's a DVD playing. The sides of the screen get narrower in the center of the sides when it's turned on. I'm mechanically inclined and...

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

That model will usually leak coolant directly onto the vertical output area and that will put the tubes into protective blanking and you will have sound but no picture.

That model is famous for the CRts leaking onto the chassis which causes all kinds of problems and can cause the main circuit board to short as well as destroy the solder. Try looking at the board for evidence of a pastey substance that would indicate CRT coolant leakage. Let me know what you find.

You need to change the convergence IC's my friend. If you know how to solder and work on printed circuit boards, this is an easy repair, BUT if you have no experience, play it safe and let a pro do this repair for you. Good Luck
