Question about Chauvet Followspot 400g with Stand

1 Answer

The followspot was on and the bulb blew with a loud bang, when I changed the bulb it powered up and came on but could no longer blackout or dim the light with the dimmer manually or DMX. I have it apart but see nothing obvious like a burn mark or anything, what do I look for and what part is the dimmer function that may be repaired or replaced. Are there any schematics to follow available.

Thank you for that info, since you have a lot of knowledge on Chauvet, I have two DMX-685 Intimidator Spot 2.0, one of them has been acting up over the past 2 years. I changed the circuit board for changing the settings address etc. but that did nothing, there are 2 other boards inside that could be the problem. What it is doing, when it is hanging upside down it will sometimes rotate hard and bang into the end of rotation regardless of the limiters and over shoot its set position by jumping it's soft gears (way of saying manual setpoints at end of travel that you can move it in to if required) so when you go to run it, it is off its alinement from the original positioning. If I power down and up it will reset to position with the limiters doing there job, but juring a show that's not possible. I checked the limiters and they work fine and it only has happened when upside down so far. It is erratic in nature because it may happen a few times a day or may not. It has done it on boot up a few times to.

When he bulb blew out, it temporarily shorted and blew out the Triac that controls the voltage to the lamp. It will need to be replaced... A lot of the Chauvet units use a 16 amp, 600 volt Triac part number :

which is available from Digikey. It will be mounted on a heatsink.

I believe your right, I traced the line to the aluminum L shaped heat sink that I would assume is related to the on off and dimming of the lamp. The lamp still works but it comes on full when you power up and have to power down to shut it off.

Yes, the Triac is in a TO220 power tab package. It may be the part number I sent you as Chauvet uses that part in their DMX light control modules. They almost ALWAYS fail shorted, with lamp on full... that is the nature of triacs and scr's.

Sometimes the number you find on the part is a partial number and one needs to be creative to fill in the blanks... the number I sent you is the complete part number. They mount them on an aluminum heatsink that is often just 1/16 thick aluminum bent to fit the device. I bought them a couple months ago from

In regards to the intermittent problem, those are the hardest to find... Things to look for: If upside down does a part of the circuitry get hotter?

I have found some soldering to be marginal in the Chauvets. Also they use some solid wire in places that really flex should be used. Pay particular attention to heavy componet leads that may have intermittent solder connections in circuit boards... It takes an experienced eye to spot these... a little grey line around the meniscus of the solder.

Another thing if the limit switches that register the starting position depend on gravity OR could be rattled mechanically during operation this might cause problems. If the connections to these are made with faston terminals, check those... I have seen where the connector missed the connector and was held in contact only by the sleeving.

In regards to the follow spot issue, you were right, I went to my friend who had that part in stock, we changed it and the fixture is working perfectly again. Such a simple part. He says the Peavey amps use them also and he changes one or two a year in them. So I now have the history if it happens again, thank you very much the fix took us about 1/2 an hour, and back in business.

I will have to take a look at the solders and see if any issues show up. What if I touch up all the solders would that be an approach that may help. I don't think it is a heat build up issue because sometimes it would happen on a cold startup.

In touching up soldering, just make sure to not create a short if pins are very close... it is easy to get a solder bridge... Look for heavy components suspended by solder and vibration points.

I have 2 peavey sp2 bx well I was pushing them really hard and blew the black widows. Now I have got a replacement and hooked it up and still no sound out of them. I do have the horns working but they...

The lamp bulb fusing is just on the horns. Check the Black Widows individually with an ohm meter for continuity. If the speakers themselves test OK, you most likely blew the crossovers. Peavey service (877-732-8391) can rebuild most of therir crossovers in house and they generally are cheaper to fix than replace.

The bulb and fuse keeps blowing out at the same time

Verify that you have the correct fuses and lamp. install the fuse(and only the fuse,no lamp) and fire it up.listen for the fan.if the fuse holds and the fan runs, you probably have an issue with the dimmer on the main board. Chauvet may be able to send you a new one, but this model was discontinued in 2012, which may parts hard to get. Good Luck!

Have a q-mix chauvet stage light goes thru all motions but light wont come on even changed bulbs and fuses alright

Chauvet uses a 16 amp Triac to control the power to many of the 120 volt lamps in their products. The Triac MAY be blown in your unit. If a bulb shorts, this blows the Triac.

I use Diigikey, com part number 497-2397-5 as the exact replacement. The generic number is BTA16-600BRG

Look for a part with this number on an aluminum plate and test the device. Also look for loose wires in the unit.

The light is not working and the bulb is not blown.

These systems have many interlocks for safety. All doors must be closed completely. Also, there is usually a thermal fuse inside that may be blown. Did this stop during use or was it shutdown and now won't start again? If it was shutdown, perhaps it was unplugged before the fan stopped. If that is the case, the thermal fuse is likely to have been blown and will need to be replaced.

Let us know what you find.

My p.a. amp makes a loud bang after ten minutes

We can only guess at what brand you might have.

First check for loose cables. Then check how warm the unit gets.

If you suspect thermal problem, then put it in freezer for a while and then see if it "lasts" longer. If it does, the problem is likely thermal.

This could be a failure that is very hard on your speakers.

Have 2 Chauvet Intimidator Spots. 1 no longer projects light and the bulb is not the issue. It powers up, goes thur its start up routine but will not light the bulb

This unit got a 24volt lamps that came from a transformer. Usually the ceramic contact of the lamp get damaged and corroded after some time and can be replace. You should test at the same time that the voltage is allright with a multimeter. Most sound shop keep such ceramic in stock because its always broken....
