Please follow these steps:
1•
Pop the hood and locate the belt routing diagram. This is typically on the core support, but if you can't find it there, look in the owner's manual to find it, as you will need it in coming steps. If you can't find it, draw a diagram that shows the route the belt takes through the pulleys.
•2
Place the breaker bar and a socket on the end of the tensioner and turn it counterclockwise to release tension on the belt. Then pull the belt off of the engine pulleys, around the fan belt and away from the engine. Release the breaker bar slowly.
•3
Install the replacement belt on the pulleys, following the routing diagram from Step 1. Work clockwise, starting at the crankshaft pulley at the base of the engine, and work your way around until you reach the tensioner.
•4
Pull the tensioner counterclockwise using the breaker bar as you did in Step 2, then route the belt around the tensioner and any remaining pulleys. Release the tensioner and check the routing of the belt. Make sure the belt isn't twisted along the path and that it sits squarely in each pulley, not hanging off to one side or another.

Is there a way to tighten the belt?

Don, there is usually a spring loaded tensioner to do this, the belt may be stretched and needs replaced, or some pulleys actually are now wear items and may need replaced. Check the video links below, some models are adjustable.

Will not drive

You haven't indicated what mower you have, but in general terms , check to make sure the drive belt is not broken. There is a tension wheel on most mowers which puts tension on the drive belt when the clutch is out. There is usually an idler pulley that puts tension on the drive belt.Sometimes a tensioning spring breaks or comes off a pulley. So confirm that the drive belt is intact and that there is tension on the belt. If this did not help, please forward info on the mower; brand, model #, serial #, and I will try to help you further.

I need to know details how to replace the hydrastatic drive belt on a Toro 616 Z mower - Model 74021, Serial Number 690549. I can't seem to figure out how to get the belt on the pulley's - especially on...

belt guides need to be removed and the tensioner needs to be pulled in to give you the slack to get the belt on.
the belt guides will need to be put back in place

The mower spit the belt off and now after putting it back on the blades do not get tight enough to cut

It sounds like the belt has stretched out and needs to be replaced or that the idler pulley (the silver colored one here- your mower may look different but this gives you the idea) is not providing enough tension. The idler pulley keeps tension on the belt. It is also possible that you put the belt back on incorrectly.

Needing to know how to replace bottom belt. i have the belt just not sure what i need to loosen or remove to get the new belt on.

the deck belt has a tensioner pulley, usually located in the middle of the deck belt will ride against not around it, all you need to do is loosen the tension on the pulley slip old belt off and slip new one on. I usually use a big screw driver to pry on the pulley, but you can use a ratchet strap. Hope this helps Tim

Belt slips on bolens riding mower has new belt

there is a belt which drives the deck/blades, and another belt which transfers power to the transmission to move the mower. you do not specify which belt, but as they both have a tensioner, you need to locate the pulley which removes the slack from the belt and replace it and the spring which provides the tension. you had to release this tension in order to install the belt so you know exactly where it is. oftentimes a close examination will reveal that the belt was not put back on correctly. if it was slipping already, you replaced the belt and it is no better then replace the tension spring. if it was working fine and the belt broke due to wear and now it is a new belt and slipping i would closely examine the path of the belt all the way around and make sure it is in right. often times there are small dowel shaped steel keepers and guides which are supposed to hold the belt in but the belt has inadvertently been routed around them which makes it slip.

good luck

Need to replace the alternator on a 95 GMC how do you lossen the belt tightner? Picture please

No real picture to give you ...you simply use a wrench or a 3/8 ratchet to turn it the way the makes the belt get lose, remove the belt, route new one on, the take tension of tensioner again, put belt over tensioner, release tensioner, and your done.

    Belt tensioners

the a/c tensioner is a real problem, replace it. the regular tensioner is usually ok. when moving it with a wrench, see if you can move it front to rear, if there is any slop at all, replace it.

I am replacing the wter pump on my 1995 GMC Sierra 1500 V-6

it is the pulley on the tensioner. put wrench on the bolt itself and push. the tensioner will move. the fan is hard to remove on those trucks but if you can break it loose first with the belt on it then once it is broke loose remove belt it makes it a lot easier. hope it helped
