Burning smell from Motor, it is not from belt.

My vacuum sucked up a ribbon and now it has a burning smell...is my vacuum toast?

  • tj77 Jun 16, 2008

My Dyson D14 has issues--when I turn it on it has great suction for a few seconds, then suction stops (as if it is clogged but there is no clog--i've cleaned every hose and also the filter and floor brush) and there is a burning smell--like a motor burning. The belt on the bottom is fine. Any suggestions?

Eureka Altima has a paper filter below the dirt catcher. It clogs quickly and doesn't allow air to flow into the motor. You can check if the issue is clogged filters by removing ALL your filters including the yellow plastic filter screwed in above the the dirt catcher, and then turning on vacuum with them removed. If there is no burning smell it's one of the filters.

Burning smell Kenmore 50558

If the burning smell is an electrical smell it could be motor or wiring problems which are best handled by a professional. If it smells like burning rubber it is probably the belt. If it smells like burnt wood it could be the belt slipping on the brush roll, if the brush roll is made of wood. Dust and debris can also accumulate behind the end caps of the brush roll causing friction which can cause a burning wood smell.

Vax v-091 burning smell and clunking noise

Is there something stuck inside, underneath, being turned along with the motor? burning smell usually means something got caught and the belt snapped. Not expensive and don't know if it's an easy DYI. Shouldn't cost too much to have it repaired or you can google the brand and model and the word belt, see what you find.

When running it smells like something is burning

Hi

If it smells like burning rubber, then your belt is probably slipping due to having lost tension and needs to be replaced. If it's another smell, it could be the motor burning out, but that is often accompanied by smoke. There could also be something caught around the revolving brushes in the cleaning head. Lie the vacuum on it's side and make sure you can spin the brushbar freely by hand. Also check for any debris entangled in or obstructing the brushes. This would also cause the belt to slip resulting in a smell of burning rubber. It could also damage the motor so I suggest not using the vacuum until the source of the fault has been determined.

Instructions on replacing the belt can be found in your user manual. If you don't have one or need further instruction on how to do this, please post back for further assistance.

Regards,
BElectric.

Work well but smell like a burning belt

If it smells like burning rubber, the belt is probably worn and slipping. If it's another burning smell, your motor windings are probably shorting and will burn out soon

Vacuum smells like something is burning

Ok...Check the brush roll is free not sticky..Next is the belt okay, not jamming on the brush roll making the burning smell...You could take off the roll and run motor on its own ..finding out if its the motor..

My vacuum cleaner is giving off a burning smell.

if its a rubber burning smell check the belt and the brushroll. if its an electrical burning smell then dont use it. the motor is overheating and will eventually get hot enough to catch fire.

Belt is hot to touch

If the belt is hot or you smell it burning then chances are it has stretched a little and is slipping on either the motor shaft or beater bar shaft. If you are sure the beater bar is not restricted from turning then I would just replace it. Try this.. With the power cord disconnected, open the vac head to gain access to the beater brush and belt.. then remove the belt.. place the beater bar back into its holder and see if it easily turns by hand.. if it is free to turn..then plug the vac in and turn it on for a few seconds.. you will see and hear the motor come on but you should NOT smell anything burning at that time. If you do.. you may have another issue with the motor or power cord or both.. if you don't smell anything burning, then disconnect the power and just replace the belt.... Good luck.

Try replacing the belt. My vacuum cleaner had the same problem and once the belt was changed the burning smell was gone.

Burning smell and smoke

When you turn it on....is the belt turning the brushes? Something may be caught causing the brushes to stick and the belt to just grind the brush assembly.

Burning smell

Hi. What does the burning smell of? Is it 'rubbery', or is it acrid and 'chemically'?! The most common item to 'burn' is the belt which drives the rotating brush at the front. Does your cleaner have a belt? This would give a burning rubber smell. The instructions should explain how to change the belt - have a close look and see if the belt has been slipping on the motor spindle. If it has, then it'll probably be worn at this point and should be replaced. A common cause of this happening is the brush bar getting caught in something - edge or rug, etc - and being forced to a standstill. If the smell is more 'acrid', it could be a problem with the motor. This is a repair service job.
