After turning on computer, reoccuring grinding sound till eventually stops, printer denotes 'scanner failure' and prompts power off then on again!

Whats going on from the sound of it is something stopping moving the scanner up and down OR your scanner cant find its referance point. These dont normally bust a gear but do get dusty

You need to look at the scanner and see what it is doing on power up, is it trying to move as if threw the edge of the machine? (no white reference) so keeps trying and thats the noise the scanner movin a mm then another trying to find home but failing.. usally due to dirty mirrors or blown lamp..

Either way I'd watch a few times,... y0u know the lamp under the lid that moves up and down;0..

Yuor HP should turn on lamp and shine it in the inside edge of the machines copy glass near after power up

You can manual move it with power off to the other end and then after removing your hand plug it in and turn it on and see what the scanner does, I bet it moves fine untill it get near home then starts dancin untill it gives up throwin your error (aka dirty mirrors, just use clean lint free soft somethin, no chemicals just good clean of mirrors. or somethings stopping the carriage movin.

Let us know how you go.. Cheers

The Fix... if Im guessing right that is..... is to remove the Torx screws that HP use (need a a torx driver) that hold on the glass, it needs to come out so you can clean the scanner mirrors reflector and lamp (DANGER 240v live UNPLUG;) and ensure the systemt runs well up and down the scan rail, i think you have to fight to remove the plastic cover from the operations panel too,and on some the Doc feeder has to come off, but on yours I think its the op panel to go so you can get to a screw or something.

I have third party software to initiate scanner functions on the Motorola but they do not work. In fact I cannot even scan without using the "Rapid Deployment Client" provided with the hardware. How do I...

DataWedge is an Application provided by Symbol/Motorola to enable the scanning module also for application without the driver. Scanned barcode is sent like an usual keyboard input.
There can be just one active application using the barcode scanner. If you are running DataWedge, you would need to stop it before starting any other application with built-in scanner drivers.
To stop DataWedge just click on the barcode icon in a right down corner and select - Disable DataWedge

Have you been using ink cartridges other than store bought? Reason I'm asking is that i used a refill kit, and tried those half price refill places, only to find ink was leaking out when not in use & clogged up the ends where the cartridge moves across. take a flashlight & look at the ends of the track that the cartridges slide across on, you may see a build up of ink, that won't allow the cartridge to travel as far as it needs to go to run properly.
