Please check if the new batteries are alkaline or rechargeable NiMH Batteries. Normal AA batteries my only take one shot and will be low batt.

Ge A735 Digital Camera will not keep power

Although you could use Alkaline batteries, it is recommended you use NiMH rechargeable batteries. They can deliver twice as much power to the camera. You shoot twice as much pictures with one charge and you can charge them almost 1000 times if used with care. Then Alkaline batteries don't perform in cold weather, second reason to use rechargeable batteries. Still any battery can go flat some time.
Never use manganese (Zinc-Carbon) batteries in your camera. They can't deliver enough power and can start leaking, causing damage to your camera.
Then there is another reason the camera can drain the power very quick.
When the contacts are not clean and shiny, the build up a resistance, making the camera believe the voltage of the battery is low. So check the contacts from the batteries and in the battery holder of the camera. If the are not clean and shiny, only clean them with a cotton swap or a dry cloth. Never use anything sharp in or close to a camera.

When the camera is powered on it says "change batteries" although i would've just put in new ones.

maybe the one you installed is not matched on your camera, means if it is alkali battery recommend by the manufacturer then use alkali battery. also set the menu you need to tell camera that you installed new battery.

Batteries fail in very short time

I had the same problem but I fixed it by buying 2 rechargable CRV3 batteries and the charger. At the time such batteries were not common, so although I got a brand that I never heard of (CTA) and they have been great, They last a long time and power is no longer an issue.

Keeps saying low battery but has new batteries I have the same problem. New batteries but camera shows low battery and only stays on for 2-3 minutes.

Your camera is a power hog. Try using the new high power battteries. Ther are expensive but generally work in this situation. There could also be a problem with the camera, I can't rule that out.

Battery Problem

These cameras have a internal battery that holds data for the camera to keep its settings. These batteries can be replaced but the camera has to be disassimboled to change it they should be able to be changed at a local camera shop pretty cheap.

Batteries

The Lithium batteries that are provided with the camera will supply approximately 200 images. The Ni-MH batteries will provide approximate 100 shots per charge. The B-10LPB Lithium Polymer battery will allow 500 - 700 shots per charge and can be recharged approximately 500 times. B-12LPB Lithium Polymer Battery will deliver twice the power allowing 1000- 1400 shots per charge and can be recharged approximately 500 times. The Alkaline batteries, although can be used, is not recommended due to very low battery life.
