You must add or change a drive letter to the drive. Right click in Disk management.

i had already changed the drive letter from F: to K:, also when i run chkdsk K: in cmd, i get that most(if not all) files are unreadable, and upon restart it asks me to run disk check at BIOS, does that mean that the info on the drive is corrupt? because i read elsewhere that it has to do with the jumpers, right now it is set to CS; it also has MASTER/SLAVE/an unmarked one/then PM2 in that order.

Is it important data on the disk?

If not you can normally repartition, format and add a drive letter to it.

If you have data on it it looks like a MFT problem (Master File Table)

Try this: Restart your machine and go into BIOS. Find your disk and select LBA and restart. Maybe your files will show up in Explorer.

No assigned letter

Dear Bev,

Disk zero would be your internal drive and you do not want to be messing about with that.

Right click on My Computer
Select manage
Select Disk Management
Identify the (correct) disk
Right click on this disk and select Mark Partition as Active
If already active select the option to assign a drive letter.

If you are saying you have already done this and these options are blanked out then it looks like your hard drive "box" is being recognised but not the drive itself which may be a drive problem. If they supplied a CD, please run it to see if it installs any drivers.

I have a Serial ATA HARD DRIVE, 80GB When connect to my Laptop through USB connection, it is recognized, installed and say it is ready to be used. I cannot see it displayed in My Computer

try going to disk management and check if it was recognized there and might just need to mark the partition as to get there simply open the RUN command and type in compmgmt.msc then hit ok you should see the computer management window then look for disk management there...

Dell inspirion 530 Black sreen at boot up with blinking cursor

HI there.
Hit F12 - enter diagnostics - then run them
It should from memory run a test called 'DST' which stands for disk short test. If this passes OK your disk is 99% ok. If OK then (my guess is you have WinXP) boot the XP install disk and attemp to install Windows. If the installer detects a version of windows already on the disk it will ask you "if you wish to repair the copy already installed"
If it does hit yes - ( you wont lose your data however I hope you have backed up)
After it has finished your done.
Hope this helps you out.....Mark

Ok, first thing you need to do is, see if you network adapter is enabled ... You can do this in the Device manager. If there even is an adapter ... If there isn't download the drivers for your Ethernet card, put them on a mem stick and just install them on your Vista machine ...

Unable to access new hard drive

Try looking for the drive in the "Disk Management". Right click on "My Computer" or "Computer" and select "Manage" then select the "Disk Management" item.

If you can see the drive, but there is no drive letter assigned, you may need to format it for your operating system or create an accessible partition on the drive. You can access all these options by right clicking on the drive from the "disk management" screen that you should be on.

Good Luck!
