Try cleaning the ink absorber underneath the cartridges when they are resting in their bay area.Else try to replace it.If still not working, then the sensor for the ink absorber might be defective.

Empty waste ink absorber IP4000

I found this at the Canon website. www.canon.com
I also have a Canon Pixma, seems my turn is up and coming too.
Ink Absorber Replacement Options This printer has an ink absorber that takes in ink during the printing and print head cleaning processes. The cleaning process is necessary in order to keep the print head nozzles from becoming clogged. Over the life of the printer, the amount of ink that the ink absorber has absorbed is calculated by the printer. Eventually, after substantial use, the printer will enter an error condition when the ink absorber is nearly full. At this point, printing is still possible by pressing the <Resume> button on the printer. To protect the printer from damage, you will not be able to print at all once the ink absorber is full.
Canon recommends having the printer serviced before the absorber becomes full. We are aware that there are many "do-it-yourself" Web sites that offer instructions for making this repair. Replacing the ink absorber is a complicated and potentially messy procedure. Even if the ink absorber is successfully changed, the ink absorber counter must be reset. Be aware that if you attempt this procedure, it is at your own risk.

When I try to print, I can't; it says "The waste ink absorber is full. Contact the service center for the replacement of the waste ink absorber."

This error means that the waste ink pads have filled up to the point where the printer believes the ink will overflow and leak or cause damage to the printer.

To give you a quick primer... Every time you run a cleaning routine or printer borderless photos the printer will dump a small amount of ink into a set of highly absorbent pads that live in the base of the printer.

These pads can only accept so much ink before they become full but experience has shown that you could reset the EEPROM waste counter if you locate the appropriate codes for your printer.

I'd recommend asking on nifty-stuff.com in the forums and see if someone can provide the information and code you need.

Hope that helps.
