Question about Ovens

1 Answer

The oven won't heat. The element on the bottom of the oven won't ignite. But the igniter is lighting and glowing bright orange. There's a heat mark on the pan above the igniter. It looks like we've been cooking our food with the heat of the igniter. We've been having this problem for quite awhile. It takes an hour sometime to preheat the oven to just 350 degrees longer if higher temp is needed. What part would you recommend I replace? Or how else could I better troubleshoot?

Yes, it was the igniter. Picked up a new one and it's working great! Thanks!

Hi,
Just because the ignitor glows, that does not mean it is working right...
The ignitor is not working right and is going bad....
have the repair man replace the ignitor, or DIY....

Why wont my bottom oven heat up, it will ignite but wont heat, has the bulb anything to do with it,its blown HELP ZANUSSI ZCG660GXC LPG gas with electric ignition and clock.

The gas valve for the lower oven won't open after the igniter starts glowing. If there is no orange glow from the igniter, then it needs to be replaced.

Whirlpool oven wont start, is there away to light the pilot?

You don't say what model you have. That being said, I highly doubt it uses a pilot light. It most likely uses a glow bar igniter to ignite the gas. Take the bottom of the oven cavity off (remove the racks and you'll see a couple screws in the back on the bottom. Remove those and the bottom of the oven cavity should lift up).

Once you have the bottom cover off, turn on your oven and watch the glow bar. If it glows bright white, it's good and your gas valve is most likely bad. If it doesn't glow at all, or it's not very bright, or it has one bright white spot on it and the rest of it looks a little yellowish orange, then you need to replace the glow bar igniter.

Anyway, that's where I'd start.

Good luck!

I turn on the stove and about a minute later it shakes the side of the house and lights. Heats well and works fine after doing this. It's a kenmore and about thirteen years old. What could be happening.

There could be expansion issues with the oven. When the oven heats up the sides or bottom could be flexing causing this. If it is a gas range with an oven igniter it could be the igniter is getting weak and the gas is not lighting right away and causes a small explosion when it does light. If it has an igniter look to see how bright it is. If it is orange in color it is probably the problem. They should glow a bright yellow. If the igniter has never been changed it could be the problem. Hope this helps.

Gas burners on top of stove work but broiler & oven do not heat up.

Hello'
Does your model have an electronic ignition? If so open broiler drawer ,turn on oven and look for bright orange glow. May take a few seconds. If it glows but no or poor flame .replace oven igniter. If no glow at all , check for voltage at igniter when switched on to see if it may be oven thermostat . Get a tech to test if not sure. All easy to fix.

Hope this helps

Jenn air gas oven won't light off/heat up

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. you have a electric oven or a gas oven that won't heat or doesn't heat properly, here are some things you will need to check. The most likely cause of a oven not heating correctly is a defective heating element. You have two types of heating elements in your oven. The bottom element(s) are the baking elements. The element(s) on the top are the broil elements. If you don't see the bright red glow from the element, chances are they are not working or not working correctly. If a heating element is bad, you need to replace the entire element. If your oven is warm and not correctly hot, one of the elements may be bad. In most ovens, when you preheat, both elements are used. This would make the oven to appear like it is working correctly but it is not. If the elements are not working, they might not be getting power. Test the wires to the elements with a voltage meter to make sure they are getting power before you decide to change them out. Many electrical ovens have a sensor that monitors the oven temperture. Ovens that have this sensor usually contain a digital display on the oven. The sensor could be defective. Those without the sensor use the basic mechanical system to control the oven temperature. You also want to check the thermostat sensing bulb. Make sure the bulb is good and has not come loose. Now, if you have a gas range oven that doesn't heat properly, first, you want to check your bake igniter. It may have burned out or it could be not working properly. It will be located near your burner. It is also possible that you are not getting gas to the burner. If so, it may be the gas safety valve or the igniter. You need to check your selector switch and thermostat as well. They may be defective. Always make sure you test the parts for power with a voltage meter of some type before you decide to change the part. If you have a part that appears to not be working, it may not be getting power because of a bad wire or broken connection.

Igniter comes on but gas won't light

It should glow almost a bright white. If its just an orange glow then replace the ignitor. Its probably just weak. If its weak it will not allow enough current to flow through it to open the gas valve. Good luck _MJ_

I used the self clean and now the oven won't heat. The broiler still works.

Hi, The most likely problem is the igniter was damaged during the clean cycle. Take the floor out of the oven and the flame spreader. set the oven for 350. If the igniter does not glow turn the power off and pull the igniter out and check it with an ohms meter. If as I suspect it reads open you should replace it. If the igniter glows it still may be bad. The igniter should glow bright yellow to the point where you can't look at it. If it glows and uneven yellow/orange it's bad and again you should replace it. If you have any other questions please feel free to comment. Mike

I have a Maytag model #MGR5754QDW gas oven. The oven isn't getting hot. I think it is also called a Precision Touch Control 500. The top works fine, just the oven will not heat up at all.

Hi, the likely cause to the problem is the igniter. Pull the floor of the oven out and then the flame spreader. Now set the oven for 350, if the igniter does not glow unplug the range and test the igniter with an ohms meter. If as i suspect it shows open you should replace it. If the igniter is glowing when set for 350 it may still be bad. An igniter should glow bright yellow to the point you can't look at it. If it glows an uneven yellow/orange it's bad and you should replace it. Mike

Glow plug comes on bright orange but does not ignite gas.

If the bake igniter glows bright grange and not bright yellow or white, it is probably because it is too weak. When this happens, the safety valve will not let the gas out into the oven burner. A weak igniter must be replaced.
