Question about Pioneer SD-533HD5 53" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

TV main power turns on and a hum/ whistle begins with activation (this may be normal, but I just got this TV from a friend and am as yet unfamiliar withe its normal sounds). When the standby power button is pressed, the green light comes on as it should and the lights activate, but this immediately goes off and reverts back to the red standby light. Any further buttons pressed get no response. I checked the one visible fuse in the back (white tube type) and verified that power is being delivered to the circuitboard, but am not sure how to proceed in testing. I have an advanced electrical meter and am trained in basic electronics as a mechanical engineer, but am not nearly as proficient in electrical as mechanical systems. Please advise

Best advise is with set unplugged follow power cord to power supply board--it should be rather large and to the right as you look from the back.

This board should have several fuses on it---most common problem is bad and poor solder connections all over the board.

Several plugs, and many screws secure it---mark the plugs and make a diagram so you know where all go.

Remove and resolder entire board---this set is one of the first that used lead free solder and like others prone to this kind of problem.

Bad connections can look ok, typical of lead free solder.

If this information told you something you did not know rate this solution as very helpful as I do this here for free.

If you have questions comment here and I will assist.

An overload with any other board, except the main power board too can cause this sleeking (Whistling) sound from the power board. It will be best to contact any service technician to confirm the actual faulty board. Gopakumar Gopalan Google

Humming noise when volume over 40

This hum could be from a ground loop or a bad main board in your TV.
1. Try removing all the inputs from the back of the TV.
2. Unplug the TV for about 3 minutes and plug it back in.
3. Turn on the TV and go to HDMI1 input.
4. Turn the volume up to see if you hear the hum.
5. If you hear the hum without any inputs into the TV, then the problem is with your main board, or with the quality of power you have going to your TV (your wall outlet may have an open or bad ground). You can try plugging the TV into a different outlet across the other side of the house (to try a different circuit) to see if your power is the problem.
6. If you don’t hear a hum without any inputs into the TV, then the audio hum is caused from one or more of your inputs.
7. You will have to plug in one input at a time into the TV, and turn up the volume to see if that one input is creating the hum. If the TV hums, then you have a problem with that device and or the cable that connects it to the TV.
8. There is a chance the hum will occur when two or more devices are connected to the TV at the same time. So be careful of this issue. This issue is not the fault of the TV and is a grounding issue between the devices.
I hope this information has helped you.
Good Luck.

Device is making a whistling sound or humming sound. It still has power and is powering the devices plugged into the back up system.

Is the unit running on battery power? A hum is normal when the inverter is running.

if it is CONSTANTLY making a humming noise, it is possible the unit is failing. Check your battery inside the unit, make sure it does not look swollen at all. If it is, you know the unit is failing and overcharging the battery. If it is not, pull the power cable from the outlet and see if it provides back up power and then plug it back in.

If the connected equipment stays on line, then the unit is working fine however I would consider buying a replacement UPS in the near future, a constant hum all the time is a bad sign.

I have a DGTEC 22'' LCD TV that has a high pitched hum when in the standby mode. This hum disappears as soon as the TV is turned on and the TV functions as normal. But as soon as it is put back to standby...

On the main power supply there are transformers that many times the factory will silicon/glue down to the PC board as these transformers with the right amount of voltage can vibrate or as you say hum. This can be corrected if you take it into a trusted TV Service Shop and make them aware of the issue so that they may be able to re-silicon or Glue these transformers better. Should be great deal of cost - usually shops have a $60 to 100, 1 -hour min charge.

Noise / vibration from gas regulator

This is on the Weber site, under support. I have been experiencing the same problem and have not used it because of it.

Humming or whistling from the regulator: Outside temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, and the gas level within the tank may cause the rubber diaphragm inside the regulator to vibrate, making a humming or whistling sound. Although this sound may be alarming, this is NOT dangerous as long as it is not accompanied by the smell of gas. If the humming sound persists, a change in atmospheric conditions will eventually stop the vibration.

No picture and a "whistle"

If your friend is being honest, and why shouldnt he, and the set was knocked over, I'll bet there is now a small crack in the main board. Cracks in boards due to dropping or "knocking over" usually occur next to the flyback transformer or tuner. Cracks in boards are very easy to fix so if you do not have experience working inside TV's then allow a qualified tech to handle it for you.

I think maybe the G-board needs to be replaced. A TV shop will have to repair it. They normally start around $200.00
