Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

1 Answer

I have had 3 of the wrt-54gs wireless routers and all have exhibited the same problem. After I get them set up, they work fine for a few months and then the wireless portion quits working. Is this problem normal or am I just unlucky in the routers I have purchased?

Linksys router not recognize internet

Make sure your router's WAN port is set to dynamic IP. If the light on the front doesn't glow/blink for the WAN port, try a different cable. If a different cable doesn't work it's probably toast. :( This problem appears to be directly linked to the relationship between the WAN port and the modem. Given that the devices can connect to the router, but not internet, it has to be the WAN. Sometimes if the modem goes out it will send too much voltage through to the router and fry the WAN. Had that happen to my parents router. If the above doesn't "fix ya" then try a different router.

Worst case, you might have to put a wireless card in your PC and bridge the modem (wired connection) to the wireless card and broadcast for your wireless devices. At least until you get a new router.

This power failure could not have happened at a worst time.
Try reinstalling the upgrade again, and if this does not fix the problem then I think you have a piece of junk.

Cannot connect to internet via router WRT 54GS

Make sure that your computer is able to go online through the modem.
If your computer is not able to go online through the modem then you will need to call ISP first.
If your computer is able to go online through the modem
then you need to connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP.

My router is still working, but can't connect to the internet

So you've done everything I've suggested already - and yup, it's definitely the router.
As I mentioned before, the DSL modem may well be quite fussy about the MAC address it sees, so if it's been successfully working with your PC, it might need 'refreshing' (normally done with a reboot) to get it to work with the router.
I'm running out of suggestions - would it cause any problems to carry out a factory reset on the Linksys router, and installing the latest firmware? Or even, perhaps try one of the many alternative firmwares that are available (I'm using DD-WRT - http://www.dd-wrt.com) and see if that works any better?
I've carried out all kinds of reconfigurations with my two WRT-54Gs, and they're quite resilient to being played about with... I really hope some of my suggestions help you get it talking to the internet again!

Loss of internet connection to desktop with WRT 160 N

If you do this and post the results I can tell you how to configure the router as you do not need the domain:-

1. connect to modem with an ethernet cable, without the router
2. assuming it's windows, start --> control panel --> Network Connections --> double click on the Local Area Connection --> Click details and post ip address, subnet, default gateway and both dns servers

Loses connection constantly

Ok, I;ve been having the same problem as you and I just had it solved. Make sure that it isn't on bellsouth's end and make sure the modem is running correctly. It should most defenately not be the router. Call them for support.

Can't connect to the network

heres what you should do, 1. reset the router from the liitle reset button on the back of router. 2. hook up the laptop wired into the router to set up your network from scratch. 3. write down all admin/wireless settings pertaining to security. 4. after you have all settings set right, reboot the router. 5. reboot all pc's on your LAN/WLAN, and if all planets are in alignment they will all be assigned an address by dhcp and you will be happy. I noticed you said you had an wrt-54gs, if you have version 1, 2, 3, or 4 then you might be interested in turning that router into a super router. check out this link http://www.dd-wrt.com - wiki here - http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php?title=DD-WRT_Docu_(EN) this is firmware that is like steroids for your router. Hope this helps.
