Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

Emerson 4 gb emp3550-4 out of the box displays white screen (no touch function) during and following initial battery chargeup; I can connect to pc and copy files to mp3 which can thereafter play through the pc, but can't use touch screen normally (and can only see static/impaired images at extreme angle).

Sorry, should have included in initial post that I had already tried to reset with a paper clip in the reset hole; no go. Firmware software from where? I found sites that charge, which seems not quite right.

  • missjonesno_ Aug 23, 2010

thanks, what you write is what I was thinking. Was trying to get it working for my 8 year-old nephew, whose birthday is today and who won the player at an arcade with the assistance of his sibs, and so it's doubtful there will be a receipt to submit the mp3 back for service under the limited warranty. Final question: your gut feeling on firmware as a fix?

  • missjonesno_ Aug 23, 2010

thank you for your assistance; I don't know how to check the display ribbon, but perhaps I'll learn. The device is most likely not worth any additional money, but I hate disappointing the kid.

It should have a reset button on the side(probably hidden into a hole that will fit the tip of a ball point pen ..or another sharp object )..
Power it up ..and try to press that button to reset it ..
If there is no reset button . or after the action it will not work ..than you will need the firmware software to reinstall the device ..

If you already tried to reset with no luck ..than the only thing you can try is to re-soft it with the original software ...Unfortunately I looked all over and there is no support site for this device ...and even if ti is not normal to be so ...you will probably have to get the firmware from a payed site ..if you think will worth the cost ...Take in mind how much you payed for it ...and for other troubleshooting ..and also how much they want for the software ..and also keep in mind that it might be damaged and will not work proper after that either ...There are no guaranties ..
I will look over to see if I find any free download for this device firmware ...and I will post it if I find any ..but so far no luck ...
keep looking over the forums that debate about similar problems ...usually if there are locations with free software ..they post them there ..

to be honest I give it a 40 % chances..cause this is a device that never worked from what I understood...and the chances to be firmware broken from the box are minimum ...so it might have another issue from factory ..The fact that it works fine like a storage device it is a good thing cause usually this units goes out from storage first ..being china made ..and in strange conditions ..(the luck of support site proves it )
In your place I would not hurry to buy it ..if it cost too much ...cause you may end up buying it again almost ..and still not to work ..I would try to see if there isnt something wrong with the display or the display ribbon plug ...cause it may be functional but cause it has the commands on the screen you can not prove it otherwise..So check teh screen ..and if you convince yourself that it is all ok physically ..and stiil consider that it is worth the chance ..get the firmware ..and reinstall it ..cause it may be corrupted and this is the reason it is not working ..

I was sincere with you and I told you my opinion...I dont think at this point that this device worth investing any additional money .. either ...better look for a new one on ebay ...cause there are available even mp4 players ..on about 30 bucks top..but there are cheaper ones (mp3) also ..the idea is to avoid buying from Chinese sellers..try to find (even second hand in good conditions ) ..but to be from US seller..and I guaranty that you will find a good one about 20 bucks..and being from US ..you will receive it in 5 days top..
    Have a good day !..

The screen comes on but doesnt show anything, just becomes white. Its a brand new Archos 4 GB MP3/MP4 visual player, purchased from the States. When i connect the player on the PC, it shows everything, but...

Screen being white sounds like a bad connection on the display panel on the device unfortunately. I suggest contacting the manufacturer for a warranty repair if it is new.

Garmin touchscreen

This was just suggested for the exact same problem with my StreetPilot 2620 and worked like a charm: (1) Disconnect any external GPS antenna. (2) Do not turn on auto engine. (3) Turn off any other peripheral devices. (4) Simultaneusly hold down the PAGE and MENU buttons while turning on the 2620. A prompt box will appear asking if you really want to delete all user data. Touch the NO selection. Then turn off the 2620. (5) Simultaneously hold down MENU & ROUTE buttons while turning on the 2620. (6) A self-running diagnostic program will appear. Allow it to run for a couple of minutes; check to see that all parameters indicate "PASS" or other indication of being OK. If any parameter is not OK, make a note of it for potential communication to Garmin, then proceed with the following steps (7) Turn off the 2620. (8) Simultaneously hold down the PAGE, MENU & ROUTE buttons while turning on the 2620. A SCREEN CALIBRATION adjustment screen will apear. Quickly touch the points indicated as the calibration program runs. At the end of this procedure, the screen will display a window indicating that the calibration either "PASSED" or "FAILED." If it "PASSED," continue to steps (8)-(9). If it "FAILED," turn off the 2620 and repeat this step. If, after three calibrations attempts, each one is "FAILED," then also turn off the 2620 and proceed to steps (8)-(9). (8) Turn on the 2620. Press the "OK" button each time prompted to do so. Wait for maps to load and for the 2620 to initialize, acquire satellites, and display your position. (9) Press FIND button, then touch the right-hand vertical screen position adjustment to scroll screen display down to reveal WAYPOINT selection box. If unable to select WAYPOINT, or if attempting to do so only selects an adjacent box, then repeat step (7), and return to this step. (10) When various waypoint selections appear, attempt to scroll down to a selection not visible when the list of waypoints first appears, and select one of them. If still unable to select WAYPOINT box, unable to scroll screen down (or if trying to do so selects a stored waypoint instead), once again repeat step (7). If successful, then proceed to step (11). Also proceed to step (11) if you have repeat step (7) but then still can't select WAYPOINT, can't scroll down after selecting WAYPOINT, or can't select a particular stored WAYPOINT. (11) Press the upper-right hand "X" to close out the FIND screen or sub-screen within that function. If unable to close the screen, press the PAGE button. (12) Press FIND button, and when selection screen appears, touch ADDRESS. On next screen, touch the STATE line and touch the ENTER A CITY in (name of state). When keyboard appears on screen, use it to enter your city, then touch OK. Continue this procedure to enter your house number and street name, then press "OK." If all screen keyboard keys not responding, repeat step (7), turn the 2620 off and on again, wait for it to initialize, and then attempt this step again. (13) Repeat this procedure several times if not initially successful. By the second or third run-through, the touch screen should respond fully and accurately. If, after many runs through this procedure, the touch screen still will not respond, the screen sensor probably will need to be replaced ($255). The foregoing procedure brought my touch screen back to life last evening, much to my delight. Do not be too concerned if the SCREEN CALIBRATION step does nto produce a "PASS;" on my third calibration attempt it produced a PASS but all of the touch screen points still had not returned to functionality. I was unable to get a PASS during the screen calibration step after that, but the many repetitions apparently nonetheless made the difference, as by patiently following the above prcoess for five cycles, full screen functionality was restored. Thank you for rating this solution. Good luck and save you $250 for something else!
