Question about Sub-Zero 650 / O Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

Open Question

Sub Zero 550 light switch

I replaced the light switch yesterday & today the refrigerator is not cold. This is an older model 550 that we had completely overhauled 3-4 years ago, and have had no problems since then. I'm wondering if there is a reset button or something I missed after putting in the new light switch. The freezer is working fine. Any suggestions? thanks Craig

I just fixed / diagnosed bad freezer light switch on Sub Zero 690 -contacts welded shut due to wire insulation rub through between the "terminator' (shuts light off in freezer if stay on for some reason) and the freon 134a coils. This caused a dead short intermittently and would trip the main circuit breaker 20A at various intervals (minutes to days). Found it accidentally only while trying to figure out why freezer light wouldn't work. Ohmmeter said freezer light switch constant continuity. The answer to your 550 could be the second switch next to the light switch-I notice this one turns the compressor off if the door is open. Maybe wires got knocked off, hooked up wrong, or switch is bad also. Switches on mine say Made In England which probably is a bad thing (look up Lucas prince of darkness in reference to British electronic company who did all the great things for Rover, MG, Triumph, Jaguar, and all other out of business lucas relations)

Sounds like your freezer drain is blocked up. You will require a freezer drain heater kit for this repair. It was a common problem for this unit and can be a easy fix. However it does take some patience to fish the heater down into the drain pan.

I had the same problem with my 550...several times the tech came out and used a steam machine to blow out the drain...which didn't solve the problem. Finally, they ordered a refrigerator drain heater from sub-zero (part#4201290) and this finally fixed the problem. Hope this helps...I'm not a tech, just a customer. K

Paul, we have the same problem with a built-in Kitchenaid and the price of replacing the fridge is out of sight for us. Where did you get the equipment to check the freon and replace it?

Clarkk I have seen this many times. Your drain is clogged. If you pull the drawers out and pull the top cover you will see the evap. On the cover you will find a nozzle that goes to the drain. Use some compressed air and blow out the drain. In some cases there will be some silicone that will need replaced. You can get a food grade silcone sealant at a hardware store. Hope this helps.

Have you cleaned the coil? Pop the grate off the top of the fridge and vacuum the coil as well as the grate thoroughly.

I need instructions how to replace the cold control on Sub-Zero 550 Freezer.

Here is a pic of the insides. The cold control is at top right of this pic and the capillary tube goes from it across to middle and then down the centre. All this is can be reached from the back of the refridgerator.

We replaced all of the light bulbs in our 550 and the lights still do not work, any ideas?

Most likely light switch is bad. Could be light limit t-stat (prevents from overheating) and wiring problem too.

Sub-zero 550 series

I had this problem in the fridge portion last year and replaced the switch at the top of the door. Problem solved. There should be two switches: one for the lights and one to turn off the compressor when the door is open. I don't remember which one was which. Try the link below for the part, but double check to make sure it's the right one. They have an 800 number to call as well. Good luck

Refrigerator not cooling properly

You may have a low freon condition in the fridge section. Look to see if you have an ice block building up on the rear wall towards the lower left side. If so, you are low on freon and the ost likely culprit is a leaking evaporater. The best way to tell if you are low on freon for sure is to take out all the shelves, remove the light cover, then the 2 screws holding the fan cover, and then remove the back wall. You wont be able to pull it all the way out cause the cold control is attached to it for the freezer and fridge so be careful. Turn the fridge control all the way up to 10 and wait till the compressor is running. you can tell if the compressor is running by pushing in the little switch on the top of the door frame and seeing if the fan runs(one switch is for lights, the other for fan) if it runs the compressor is on. anyway watch the coils and see if they develop frost all the way from top to bottom. If they dont you are low on freon and are ooking at about a $600 repair. if it does frost all the way you may have a bad cold control or a stalling fan motor up by the condensor on top. The best way to tell this is the next time the fridge feels warm, sheck the frame around the door seal and see if it is hot to the touch. If it is you almost surley have a bad condensor fan motor. Hope you can wade through all tis to find the answers. Good Luck!
