Question about Craftsman 42 in. Deck 19.5hp Lawn Tractor

2 Answers

Very load knocking started today, shut off engine but its probably shot. Where can I find a engine that will fit a Craftsman 1000 built in 2000? What engines will fit this mower other than the 19.5 engine?

need exact information on what engines will fit the Craftsman 42" mower, 2000 model year so I can swap out the engine. model no. 917.271821. There is a 19.5 HP Briggs in it now

I would like information on what engines will fit in a Craftsman 19.5 HP Electric Start Mower Automatic Lawn Tractor. My 19.5 HP original motor is shot and I want to know what engines can be used to replace the original. Would other Briggs & Straton engines of different HP fit right in or do I have to get a 19.5 Briggs. The model no. is 917.271821 for the tractor and model 461707 for the engine.

This INTEK engine is repairable for a lot less than the cost of a new engine no matter the brand if your personal skills are up to par. The Engine Model number should be 31P677-0117-G1. The parts list for this engine can be found here: http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/manual_and_more/docmanualdetails.aspx?showpdf=MS3748_H_LO.pdf

Most likely the Rod end bearing has failed. (page 2 item 29 of above link) You can change just the connecting rod and bearing. It requires removal of the lower crankcase cover and the cylinder head to accomplish the task and you will need a new crankcase gasket (Item 12 same page listed in 385 engine gasket set) . There is about a 70 % chance you can use the head gasket again. (Item 7 of gasket set)

There are several engines that will fit this mower. Kawasaki, Honda, Kohler. All are extremely expensive in comparison to repair. I know you asked what engine would fit. I am just trying to save you a ton of money. If you really want a different brand replacement engine vs repair of the old one just respond here and I will do my homework and get back to you as soon as possible.

Thanks for Choosing FixYa,

Kelly

I know ytou accepted the answer but I have to correct the model diagram data as you listed a model number different from what I used.

Here is the correct manual: http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_r...

Item numbers are the same as in my last response except there is an "A" after the part number for the 2nd cylinder

Yes I caught that, but your answer still gave me the information I needed to make a decision. If I am reading the information correctly I need a service manual for a Briggs

I do not know of any place to get a free service manual. Most of them on line are small engine service manuals and they are up to revision 3. Good manual yes... engine specific no but would have all the information you need to change out a connecting rod. I would also recommend a set of piston rings since you already have it out. You said it was a 2000 model so 10 years of working life things you would need to do... check lower crankcase seal, valve hand lapping with grinding compound and a mini plunger or your thumb, Not much else unless you discover other problems.

There are 2 manuals for the L head engines 1916- 1981 and "post 1981" <- your maunal. They run $14 - 22.00 and worth every penny. Here is a link to the manual for purchase but you should be able to get it from your local lawn mower repair parts shop:

    http://search.cartserver.com/search/sear...

If by some miracle you happen to find an electronic "working copy" on line.... pass the link. I do not know of any and have been working on small engines for 40+ years.

    Wish you the best.

Before you go and trash the engine, go to youtube and watch some of the videos about small engines, lawn mowers, I think the guy's name is farm? something.
Anyway it might not be blown, might just have a bad rod or something. I would look for an engine on ebay first, or craiglist. I have an 18 hp kawasaki engine right now on craigs list, no takers yet. Came out of a John deere. Well check out the videos, you might not need the engine. Hope this helps.

I wasn't offering you my engine, even though they probably use a kawasaki engine somewhere, I was just telling you they are available on craigslist and ebay. Look up your engine's numbers and ask potential sellers if they match, The best way to get one to fit.

Out of oil and the eingine shut off

Ooh, the news is probably very bad. I think the engine seized, not just shut off. The knocking sound would be failure of one or more of your engine bearings due to oil starvation.
You could try refilling it with oil and cranking it to see if it starts, then measure the oil pressure and listen for bad noises, but I think you will need a replacement motor. Sorry.

Will an engine from a LT1000 fit into a LT2000 tractor? Jim

You should have no problem getting the engine from a LT 1000 to fit in place of the original on a LT 2000. The physical space between the two mowers should be identical.

If really helpful, please rate.

Have 12 gallon / 1HP Craftsman compressor, accidentally ran it while it was low on oil....about half way low. It shut itself off. Then, I added oil and it started up. But now it builds pressure VERY slowly...

Not the motor, but probably the compressor shot. Heat from friction (due to running without oil) probably scored the cylinder walls, which allows air to escape past the piston and rings, making the compressor VERY inefficient. Some compressors have replaceable cylinders... Not sure if the very small ones do or not.

Where is the knock sensor located in 2000 chevy 5.3 v-8?

They are located below the intake manifold, you may have to remove the intake to change them. The sensors may be shot, they have a problem with water puddling in their mounting wells, after changing, seal the sensors with an RTV to keep water out of the wells

The Knock Sensor (KS) system detects engine pre-detonation. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) retards the spark timing based on the signals from the knock sensors. The knock sensors produce an AC voltage when specific frequencies are detected. The knock sensor voltages are an input to the PCM. The amount of AC voltage produced is proportional to the intensity of the knock.
When you ****** timing fuel mileage goes down.

Your engine is toast. The black smoke indicates more than likely your valve seals are leaking oil into the combustion chamber or the piston rings are shot.
