There is a wire on the switch which has to go to a ground somewhere on the mower. There may be a screw on the key switch where you can connect a ground wire from any part of the metal frame to the switch.
You have connected the wrong wires in the wrong way to the key switch - now the ignition to the engine is constantly connected the the power; leave it like that and it will drain your battery pretty quickly.
Take them out and start all over again: first identify the power wire; then the ignition to the engine; then identify the correct plugs in the key switch. Only when you are absolutely sure which is which you should reconnect them.
Make sure the harness ground is grounded to the engine,if it is,the configuration will be different in the key switch, and you will have to use your old switch. But switching the switches can cause a melt down so be care full when plugging the other switch in,and trying it out.
If you are talking about the key switch I had mentioned, can be the problem,on these ,the key switch can look exactly the same, but they are not,and the terminals are configures different, most of the time you can look on the back of the switch and see the letters that mark the terminals and make sure they are the same.

I tried using the old switch, no different. I mowed today and noticed that the seat safety switch is not working even though it is hooked up. Any ideas where i can get a wiring diagram that is detailed . I went off a diagram that listed models 927037, 043, 045, 047, 048 and so on but not very detailed. I am thinking I may have all the swithes hooked up wrong not sure. Gave up for today, will be back to figuring it out tomorrow.I did get the starter to start it, but had to go get a new battery and am charging it now.

How can that be, because the plug only goes on the ignition one way.
I bought a rm9030e with no engine. wasnt sure of the engine that was on it originally. I am trying to put the wiring and other components that was on the 9030e on to my 830. I was given a 10 hp tecumseh with a starter when i picked up the 9030. I am trying to put the starter on the 830. If you have a diagram I would appreciate looking it over to see if it will help
and according to the manual I just looked at the 9030 had the briggs engine my 830 has the tecumseh
I solved the problem. I put the old harness back on and took the two wires that went to a plug on the end of the harness and connected them to the solenoid and now everything works. Mower starts with the key and most important it shuts off with the key. Thanks to all those that tried to help.
