How do you service and adjust the front fork suspension... Way stiff!!


Fork adjustment varies from bike to bike. Some have no adjustment at all, some have screws that you turn in and out, some are adjusted/aided by air. Some people change the weight (viscosity) of the fork oil, fit firmer or looser springs etc. Fork adjustment and settings depend on the riders size, handling and bike style so there really is no "stock setting, one size fits all".
What you consider way stiff may be ideal for me but too soft for someone else.
The best way to find out how to adjust the settings (if it is possible) is find a forum online relating to your bike as adjustments of this sort is a fairly hot topic of discussion.

My soft tail rides really stiff on rough roads. What can I do to soften the ride. Seems like the front forks are stiff. Just had shocks serviced.


As far as the rear suspension, a softtail won't ride a smooth as one with a swingarm, as the softtail has less travel.

On the front end, Harley has three different "thicknesses" of fork oil, light, medium, and heavy, which gives different suspension dampening.

If the front forks are too stiff, you could try a lighter fork oil.

Front pedals


Yes, you got the bolts too tight on the axle shaft. You have to "sets" of nuts, the inner and the outer. The inner nuts on the shaft, which go inside the fork, should be adjusted so the wheel is rolling freely, with just a tiny "slop". Now, you will need to figure out a way to tighten the outer nuts to hold the wheel on the fork without turning or moving the inner nuts! Some bicycle shops use specially thin wrenches.

Front forks oil refill


Check air pressure under the caps (on top of the shocks). Should only have up to 10 psi in them.

Front forks on 1996 honda shadow are very soft


Hi, Anonymous if your front forks are stiff or soft or not performing as required the usual suspects are:
1. Incorrect fork oil capacity.
2. Incorrect fork oil weight.
3. Incorrect air pressure.
4. Fork springs are worn out.
5. Fork springs installed upside down.
6. Fork springs are the wrong length.
7. Fork springs not designed for year and model.
8. Slider spring missing from fork assembly.
9. Slider spring installed incorrectly.
10. Incorrect fork seals or bushings facilitating stiction.

Soft front end


Change fork seals and cha he fork oil sounds like dirty fork oil or low on oil but do change oil and seals gx luck if u want a stiff front end can also use thicker oil check OEM oil viscosity and what they recommend for stiffness

I have a 1987 cbr 600r Hurricane and i need to know how much air to put in the front forks?


The front forks are adjustable to the type of ride you want. First, set the rear shock to the setting you want soft, medium, or hard. There should be max pressure information in your owners manual and on a sticker on the front forks. Typically the most pressure that can usually be put into a Honda front fork is around 14 PSI. Add, carefully, 10-12 PSI using a hand or foot bicycle pump with a gauge on it. You will probably find this way too stiff. Be careful not to put too much pressure in the forks or you will pop the seals and have to replace them.Then with the bike loaded the way you are going to ride (soft for comfort or hard for two up riding) bounce on the seat. What you want to feel is the front and back suspension dropping at the same time. This is how racers set up there motorcycles for hard cornering. If both the front and rear of the cycle drop together you have an easier time controlling the bike during extreme maneuvers. Since the front is usually stiffer than the back(you added pressure there) slowly bleed the pressure out of the front fork tubes until the the front and back drop together while you are bouncing with the bike loaded the way you are going to ride. Now you are set up for extreme riding conditions. Soft or hard that is how you set up all motorcycle suspensions by balancing the the amount of front cushion/pressure to match the back cushion/pressure.

I have chrome front forks and they seem to be getting mushy and make a clicking noise when I stop hard


The "clicking" noise you are hearing when you make a "hard stop", is the springs inside the fork compressing. This is not unusual. You can change your fork oil viscosity to stiffen the forks but they may be too stiff once you've done it, The only way to tell is try it.

There is a small screw or bolt on the down low on the fork lower slider. Take this screw out and work the front end up and down, The fork oil will be pumped out the front end. This makes a terrible mess so don't do it in your living room.

Once you have the oil out of the front end, it's best to lift the bike off the ground. Remove the top cap from each tube and refill the fork tubes with the proper amount of oil for a "wet" oil change. Sorry but I don't have that information but it will be somewhere around 10.2 ounces. Check to make sure for your year model. I put 30 wt. fork oil in my FXDWG and the forks are a bit stiff but that's how I like them. Try it and if it's too stiff, you'll just have to change it back to say 20wt or maybe Honda might have a 25 wt. oil. Do one side of the forks at a time.

There are three most common weights of fork oil. 5W is a light oil for a smoother ride, 10W is a heaver oil for stiffer suspension and 15W is mainly used for a stiffer ride such as racing. I have found 20W and 25W oils but they are not that common.
If you are a pleasure rider 5W or 10W would be the right oil for you. If you are always "in the twisties" and riding the limits of the bike, go with the 15W.

Rear shock adjustment how do I do it and is there an adjustment for the front forks


Most rear shocks are adjustable by turning the bottom parts of the spring perch the spring is more stiff. The front forks are not adjustable.
