Question about Dell XPS 200 PC Desktop

3 Answers

Thought it was the western digital harddrive, bought a new harddrive and the problem is the same. The computer when running gets very loud. Now I am wondering if the problem is actually the power supply. Spoke with Dell about this problem when it occurred months after purchasing and was told the problem is that some harddrives are louder than others. Its annoying when I use the computer I have to turn the volume up on the TV

Tanya Younger --
Your noise problem is most likely the cooling Fan Assembly. The XPS200 Service Manual is available online at:
When the fan gets dusty/dirty, sometimes gets out-of-balance and generates noise. If your PC is still under warranty, DELL can replace this unit. If you still need assistance, write back. -- SWT

There are two fans, one in the power supply and one cooling the processor. Can you determine if either is noisy? If so, replace the offending fan. If it is the PS, you have to replace the whole unit.

Disks can make a lot of noise but if the system is not doing anything and the disk light is not blinking and you still get a lot of noise it is one of the fans or maybe a capacitor in the Power Supply.

I'm not sure about your BIOS but some dell bios let you adjust the disk drives for "quiet mode" vs performance. I would assume the Dell rep took you thru that option.

Your P.C. may need cleaning inside, Dust may of gathered in Fans, HeatSink, etc. When you connect things to your P.C. normally extra power is needed from help run the process. Hence why your P.C. gets more noisier and things get hotter needing the fans to cool them. Or your Power Supply Unit (PSU) replacing for more Watts.

The hard drive could have been irreparably damaged. The chattering sound is the heads trying to find the beginning of the data sectors and can't. The drive will shut itself off automatically after a predetermined time period.

Western Digital MYBOOK 500GB external harddrive won't come on. When it plugs in, the blue light comes on for about a second. Computer does not recognize drive.

It is "dead". If it is still under warranty (check 'www.wdc.com' for details), then Western Digital will replace it. If not, check their web-site, for their "Customer Loyalty Program", i.e., since you bought one W.D. disk-drive, you can get a discount on buying another W.D. disk-drive, if you order online from W.D.'s web-site.

I lost my power cord for my western digital notebook. Does anyone know where I can get a new one?

Best bet is to buy a used one on eBay, but barring that you can simply have your local computer shop transfer the WD harddrive into a new shell with a new power adapter for less money in most cases.
