Probably gave a wrong description of the problem. Listened more carefully-after filling is done,it makes a continuous and loud humming noise ONLY(not a groaning sound or something holding back feel)with the cycle clock going.Have set the dial at other settings such as spin and it makes the same humming noise.Have set it at rinse- it fills with water and then the same loud humming noise.Sorry for the wrong information. Will it change your diagnosis and repair suggestions? Thanks

Thanks for your prompt response kelly. To answer your question-it does not agitate or spin, just hums and also clicks every few seconds.Does not sound like any thing is running other than filling with water. My skill level is negligible.Called a friend ,his guess is a bad lid switch. Your thoughts as a veteran tech. will be appreciated. Thanks again

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly.

If you can use a mirror carefully under the machine and see that the motor is actually turning both belts when it is supposed to be agitating. (CAUTION the pump belt is in the very front of the machine base.) I suspect that it is driving the belts normally.

Inside the transmission there is a nylon gear that drives the agitator shaft for agitation. It sounds like the nylon gear has stripped gear teeth. This can be repaired and parts are available but it is a major undertaking, time consuming and not cheap.
To repair this if the nylon gear has failed the top, agitator, inner and outer tubs, large lower pulley and transmission must be removed. I will say this is not your average repair. Let me just add that this washer can still serve a long service life if repaired.
(I personally own a LAT9700 and just spent the time and money to overhaul it 2 weeks ago) Your call on having it repaired or replacement i.e evaluation / comparison time..... . This repair if done correctly by a seasoned tech takes well over 2 hours of shop time so keep that labor expense in mind. I have worked on Maytags for over 40 years that started with the Family business.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

It certainly does. Here is my question... Does it agitate and spin yet make that loud hummong noise? Or there is no movement and the unit hums. This sounds like the motor is not turning at all. Here is what I would like you to do. Unplug the unit but do not disconnect the water lines. Tip the unit to the rear and block it up so that there is enough room to safely place your hand under the unit. Squeeze the drive belt together mid point between motor pulley and the large drive pulley. The motor is on a floating mount. Then let go and try to turn the motor by hand. WATCH for movement of the drain pump pulley AND the motor pulley.

Note the large drive pulley will appear to turn free in one direction (agitation) and really really hard in the other direction (spin) attempt to turn the large pulley at least half a turn.

If you can turn it by hand remove the blocks and place unit in original position. Test SPIN and see if you get the same hum.

If the motor does not start there are few things that can cause this.

Motor winding, bearing or motor switch failure

    Timer failure.

I do not know your personal skill level so fo the moment I am keeping this pretty basic. I will be watching for any responses.

It just hit me that... the motor may be running and the drive belt either broke or for some unknow reason came off the pulley. The motor might be running and the motor shaft it driving against the base of unit. You really need to look UNDER the base at the 2 belts. The belts are items 20 and 21 this link:

Won't start

if it filled proplerly and won't start now, it sounds like the door switch is broken, there could be something wrong with the rest of the electrical systems, however i would suggest the switch first. If there is a lot of noise like its trying to run, then its probably your transmission.

Plug off the wall, etc. Remove the rear cover. There is a thin tube coming from the control panel area to the base where the water exits, this should not be blocked, remove from top and blow to check, refit. Next clean out your outlet filter, it could be clogged, refit. This tube controls the water level. Do not overload your machine, the manual will tell you the max load. Check to see if any hose has come loose from behind the machine; look inside from behind.
