D drive has dissappeared

Hi,
I could have removed my D drive in th safely remove hardware(Bottom right of XP Prof.) Have and external hard drive and when removing it, I think it could have clicked on D-drive.
My problm is that when I uninstall my built in Dvd-rom and search hardware to reinstall it, I always get the yellow exclamation mark and the drive is not visible. I cannot seem to find a driver to download that would replace the incorrect driver that xp always find. At present I show no D-drive. Also when booting my computer with the operating system in the d-drive it has no effect
Can you please Help!

Hello Ungeni

Can you post me the error code you get in the device manager.

Windows doesn't allow you to remove buildin devices from safely remove hardware.

If your error code is 31,32,19,39 or 41
this should solve your problem

Which operating system ?

It's always a good practice to safely remove your USB flash drive before unplugging it from your computer.
This prevents data loss and extends the life of your external storage device.
Removing a flash drive from your computer is very easy and doesn't take a long time to do.

Close all files you accessed from the flash drive.
This is necessary for the device to be removed properly.
Don't forget to save your files before closing the files.
Right-click the "USB" icon marked with a checkmark.
It is located on the bottom right of your taskbar.
From the pop-up menu, click "Safely Remove Hardware."
A small window will be displayed.
Select the USB flash drive you want to unplug then click the "Stop" button.
A confirmation window will appear. Click the appropriate hardware device, then click "OK."
The "Safe to Remove Hardware" window will inform you that it's now safe to unplug the USB flash drive from your computer.
Click "OK," then click "Close."
or

My safe to remove icon has dissappeared how can re install it please

Which operating system ?????????

The system tray in Windows XP is the right side of the small blue bar at the bottom of the screen that houses the clock and a few other small icons. You can add icons to the system tray for ease of access, including the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon, which allows you to easily remove hardware from your computer.

Turn on the Windows XP computer and right-click the taskbar. Select "Properties" from the menu that appears. Check "Hide Inactive Icons", then select "Customize" A new window appears with all of the icons currently on the system tray, along with icons also for some programs that don't appear on the tray. Click next to the icon "Safely Remove Hardware," then check the box "Always Show". Click "Apply". Safely Remove Hardware Icon?

Why not just pull it out instead of clicking on safely remove hardware? Try it and see if it works. Sounds like your usb drive is not windows 7 compatible. Or windows 7 has some driver issue which is not uncommon.

External hard drives don't need any program installed on your computer to run. Your operating system Windows, Linux should handle it as soon as you plug the usb in your computer. The programs included in your WD external hard drive are tools to backup your data.

If you try to hook up your hard drive to a Windows prior to XP, maybe your computer will not handle it.

It is always safer to safely remove your drive using the green arrow icon in the lower right corner of your screen. This way, the drive is shut down properly and you minimize chances of fails when you plug it again on another computer.

Hope this helps!
